Overview of the Role

Overall, how would you describe your experience at Balfour Beatty?

Over the past year on the HR Graduate Scheme, I have completed two six-month rotations across HR Shared Services (primarily in the systems team) and Employee Relations & Compliance with a another two six-month rotations coming up in Resourcing, Business Partnering within an SBU. The programme has provided me with a broad understanding of the HR function and the opportunity to develop invaluable skills through hands-on experience in different areas of the business whilst giving you the flexibility and choice to decide which areas of the HR function you want to focus your rotations on. Working with a wide range of teams and stakeholders has enhanced my knowledge, confidence, and professional development, giving me a strong foundation for my future career in HR.

What are the main responsibilities of the role and which elements of the role do you enjoy the most?

As an HR Graduate, my responsibilities have varied across each rotation and have included providing support of HR systems projects, supporting employee relations casework, ensuring compliance with policies and procedures, and in the future helping with recruitment activities and initiatives and providing general HR support partnering a business unit. Throughout the programme, I have worked closely with a wide range of stakeholders, developed my problem-solving and communication skills, and gained exposure to the full employee lifecycle.
The aspect I enjoy most is the variety of experiences and opportunities to learn. Each rotation has provided a different perspective on HR, allowing me to build new skills and broaden my understanding of the function. I particularly enjoy working with people, supporting managers and employees, and contributing to positive outcomes that make a real difference to both individuals and the business. The graduate scheme has also allowed me to build a strong network across the organisation and gain invaluable practical experience that will support my future career in HR.

Recommendations & Advice

Would you recommend Balfour Beatty to a friend?

Yes

Why?

I would recommend Balfour Beatty because of the variety of opportunities available and the support provided to graduates. Over the past year, I have been able to experience several different areas of HR (with more to come), develop invaluable skills, and work alongside people who have genuinely invested in my development. The company encourages learning and growth, and I have felt challenged, supported, and valued throughout my graduate journey so far.

How well did the role match your expectations based on the recruitment process?

5/5

When considering the recruitment & onboarding process, have you any specific tips or advice you would give to others applying to Balfour Beatty?

My advice would be to be yourself throughout the recruitment process and let your personality come across. Balfour Beatty values people who are eager to learn, so don't be afraid to ask questions and show your curiosity. You don't need to know everything from the start. A positive attitude, willingness to learn, and genuine interest in the role and the company will go a long way. Once you join, make the most of every opportunity, get involved, and be open to learning from those around you.
