Graduate Surveyor Review

My experience at Savills has been very positive. The graduate scheme has given me exposure to different areas of commercial property while allowing me to take on real responsibility from an early stage. I have worked with experienced colleagues across different teams and gained exposure to a wide range of properties, clients and instructions. I have also found the social side of the graduate scheme enjoyable and have felt well supported throughout my rotations.

During my Valuation rotation, my main responsibilities included assisting with inspections, comparable research, valuation analysis and the preparation of valuation reports. I worked across a range of commercial properties and particularly enjoyed inspecting properties and seeing how factors such as location, lease terms, rental evidence and investment yields feed into the final valuation. I also enjoyed gaining exposure to secured lending instructions and understanding how our advice is used by clients.
During my Property Management rotation, my responsibilities included assisting with rent and service charge matters, arrears, lease events, tenant queries and the day-to-day management of commercial properties. I enjoyed the greater level of ongoing involvement with individual assets and the interaction with landlords, tenants and other teams. The rotation has also improved my understanding of how lease terms work in practice and how properties are managed throughout the ownership cycle.

I feel that I have been given good opportunities to contribute to live instructions rather than only completing graduate-level administrative tasks. As I have progressed, I have been trusted with more responsibility and have felt that the work I complete contributes to the wider team.

The overall compensation package is good when the wider benefits are considered, particularly the structured APC support, training, professional membership and other employee benefits. I feel the graduate scheme is preparing me well for my future career by giving me experience across different disciplines and allowing me to build the practical experience and competencies required for my APC.

I feel supported through the APC support structure and advise, the platforms within savills such as my learning, as well as having access to external RICS materials. Importantly, having RICS professionals within the business to speak to is equally important.

The support I received for both wellbeing and APC advise in both my rotations varied however I would say they ranged from good - excellent.

Though it has differed at certain stages, it is important to note that it has continued to get better as my tenure has progressed, through experience, setting boundaries and managing my workload.
