Software Engineering Intern Review

My role involved building an internal system designed to be used by multiple teams across Bloomberg Engineering. On a day-to-day basis, I was responsible for making design and implementation decisions, writing code, and thoroughly testing my work through unit and integration tests. I also deployed and tested the system in both development and production environments, ensuring that each component worked reliably as part of the broader system.

I would say that the level of responsibility and the opportunity to take ownership of your project are really high. Throughout my internship, I was trusted to make meaningful decisions and take responsibility for my work. You really don’t feel like “just an intern”: you are treated as a member of the team and given the opportunity to make a real contribution.

I learned how to write production-quality code, contribute to technical design discussions, and communicate effectively with other engineers. I also developed my problem-solving skills and learned how to approach technical decisions while considering the broader impact on the system and the team.

Every intern is paired with a mentor who provides support and guidance throughout the entire project. I had a great experience with mine: he was always available to help, discuss ideas, and give me feedback whenever I needed it. He was also very friendly and made it easy to ask questions or reach out for support.

You can really feel that the company puts a lot of effort into creating a positive and welcoming culture. During the internship, you have the opportunity to take part in volunteering activities, attend different events, and meet people from across the company. I was particularly impressed by the amount of effort that goes into organizing every event I took part in. Overall, I would say that Bloomberg is a great place to learn, grow your career, and be surrounded by people who are always willing to share their knowledge and experience.

I really enjoyed my time here, especially because of the connections I made, the impact I was able to have on the team, and the supportive environment around me. I felt like my work was meaningful and that I was genuinely contributing to the team, while also having plenty of opportunities to learn and grow throughout the internship. I also really appreciated the work-life balance, which made the overall experience even more enjoyable.
