Overview of Role
Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis.
The software engineering role involves understanding large scale systems, integrating new components into them to accommodate and support new features that add value to the product. You need to work closely to the product team in order to fully understand the customer needs and to build something that suits their requirements. Nowadays you need to leverage AI tools to optimize your work and improve productivity, but you also need to pay attention to testing to make sure that what the LLM suggested is actually correct.
Were you given much responsibility during your placement / internship?
I was given full ownership over my project, so I would say yes, since the project was intended to reach production in the end and impact clients.

Skills Development
Have you learnt any new skills, or developed your existing skills?
- technical skills: I had a fullstack project for the first time, so I learned about the whole lifecycle of implementing a new feature. I got familiar with Python for the backend, React with typescript for the frontend and also the necessary infrastructure to make them communicate with each other and internal Bloomberg technologies;
- soft skills: team work, presentation skills, integrating AI in day-to-day workflow, cross-team collaboration (especially with the sister teams, product and other departments), prioritizing, time management and estimation.

Support and Guidance
How much support and guidance did you receive during your placement / internship?
A lot. I had 1:1s scheduled with my mentor 2 times a week, but actually we were syncing way more often than this because anytime i had a question, he was available to hop on a meeting with me to answer all of my questions and give me feedback. The same applied for my team leader. Other than them, I also got the support of the rest of my team, who were reviewing my code as well and were very open to help me.

Company Culture
What was the company culture and general atmosphere like?
- Very diverse and inclusive.
- Everybody was open to having 30-min coffee chats with us no matter how busy or senior they were.
- I loved the fact that they were encouraging volunteering (philanthropy is a very important part of Bloomberg).
- There are lots of communities that you can join and have an impact in, for instance I was interested in the Bloomberg Women in Tech community.
- Lots of networking events.
- Everybody was open to having 30-min coffee chats with us no matter how busy or senior they were.
- I loved the fact that they were encouraging volunteering (philanthropy is a very important part of Bloomberg).

What advice would you give to others applying to Bloomberg
Besides thorough preparation for the interviews, especially the system design one, I would suggest not to neglect the behavioral part and to honestly assess if they are a good fit culture-wise, since culture is a very important part of Bloomberg.
