Data Management Professional Intern Review

My role involved owning a technical data science/data engineering project from start to finish, based on a real business problem identified by the team. I worked closely with a mentor who provided guidance throughout the project. The first couple of weeks focused on orientation and team-specific training, followed by hands-on project work and a final presentation of my findings. On a day-to-day basis, I mainly programmed in Python, worked with data through the terminal, analysed results, and developed the project iteratively.

I had full ownership of my project from start to finish, and as no one had worked on this particular project before, the work I produced was entirely my own. While I had support and guidance from my mentor when needed, I was responsible for driving the project forward and making key decisions throughout.

Yes, I developed both new and existing technical skills during my placement. I gained a deeper understanding of Python, developed my SQL skills, and became familiar with internal tools and workflows. I also gained more experience using GitHub for version control and managing my work.

I received a good level of support and guidance throughout my placement. I had a mentor who was available to answer questions, provide feedback, and help guide the direction of the project, while still giving me the independence to take ownership of the work and solve problems myself.

The company culture was very friendly, supportive, and collaborative. People were approachable, and I could easily reach out to colleagues through the terminal to arrange coffee chats and learn more about their roles. The office atmosphere was also relaxed, with free drinks and snacks available in the pantry. There was very little micromanagement, and I felt trusted to manage my own work and deliver on my responsibilities.

I really enjoyed my placement. It was a great experience both professionally and socially, as I made a lot of new friends while also developing valuable technical skills. I learned a lot throughout the internship and gained practical experience that I can carry forward with me.
