Graduate Site Engineer Review

My experience at Balfour Beatty when I first started was really good. I was able to get stuck in straight away and was given challenging tasks, especially as a Graduate Civil Engineer. One of the things I enjoyed most was being able to apply the theory I learned at university to real projects and see how it works in practical setting on site.

Learning what it's like to work in a very busy environment, especially within operations, has been a great experience. I've gained a good understanding of how everything works on site and how we programme and plan activities to keep the project moving forward. Working closely as part of a team has also helped me build my confidence, both on site and when working with project managers and engineers in the office.
One of the biggest lessons I've learned during my graduate role is to never be afraid to ask questions, even if they seem silly. You're still learning, and asking questions is one of the best ways to develop your knowledge, gain experience, and build confidence in your role.

From the beginning of my graduate programme, i have been trusted to manage multiple packages across the project, which has given me responsibility and ownership from an early stage in my career. A key part of my role involves coordinating with the design team to ensure design drawings is submitted on time. Working closely with site teams, designers, project managers, and engineers has helped me build strong working relationships and confidence in my abilities.

One of the perks of working here as a Site Engineer is that I was provided with a company car from the start. We also receive £1,400 subsistence as part of our salary to help cover temporary accommodation, as the role requires working away from home five days a week.
There are also other benefits available, including discount schemes, dental cover, and healthcare perks. Every month, our project holds a STAR Award meeting where people can be recognised for their hard work and receive a £50 voucher and a trophy.
One thing I really appreciate is that the effort graduates put into the project never goes unnoticed. Hard work is recognised by the whole team, including senior management and the Project Director, which makes you feel valued and motivated.
Another great benefit is the structured progression within the Early Careers programme. For the first four years, there are salary reviews every six months. After completing the two-year graduate scheme, you transition directly onto the Early Careers Plus programme for a further two years.

From the beginning of my graduate role, I was thrown in at the deep end and given responsibility for managing my own package. While it was challenging at first, it helped me develop quickly and gain valuable experience in project delivery.
Now, two years later, I can see how much I have grown in confidence and capability. The experience I have gained has prepared me well for the next stage of my career, and I feel confident about stepping into a Project Engineer role in the near future.

When I first joined the project, I spent a lot of time shadowing Project Engineers and Project Managers to understand how the project was being delivered. I got along really well with my line manager, and she put together a structured programme for me to follow throughout my graduate scheme.
She created an objectives tracker for me, which set out the areas she wanted me to gain experience in and take on more responsibility. The main areas of focus included health and safety, programme and planning, design coordination, commercial awareness, contract conditions, technical knowledge, and supervision on construction sites.

I have a great working relationship with my colleagues, and sometimes it doesn't even feel like I'm at work. It feels like I'm working alongside friends while continuing to learn and develop in my role.
I know that in many jobs there can be a culture of regularly working overtime and outside of contracted hours. However, on my project, there is a strong focus on maintaining a healthy work-life balance. We are encouraged to work our contracted 45-hour week and then switch off at the end of the day.
Most days the office closes at 5pm, and on Fridays we usually finish around 4pm as many of us travel home for the weekend.

The organisational culture on my project is very positive, supportive, and collaborative. Everyone is approachable and willing to help, regardless of their role or level of experience. As a graduate, I have always felt comfortable asking questions and seeking advice from project engineers, managers, and other members of the team.
The project places a strong emphasis on teamwork, safety, and personal development. People are encouraged to take ownership of their work while also supporting one another to achieve the project's goals. Hard work and good performance are recognised through initiatives such as the monthly STAR Awards, which helps create a positive atmosphere and makes people feel valued.

As a Muslim working as a Site Engineer, one thing I appreciate is how inclusive and respectful the project is towards different beliefs and backgrounds. Finding a suitable place to pray can sometimes be challenging on construction sites, but our office has a dedicated prayer room that is available for anyone who wishes to use it.
During Ramadan, everyone is very respectful and understanding. Prayer times and the Ramadan timetable are displayed in the office, which helps raise awareness and allows people to be mindful of religious commitments. From my experience, the team has always been supportive, and I have felt comfortable practising my faith while working on the project.

I have already recommended Balfour Beatty to multiple friends because I've had such a positive experience here. One thing I find quite funny is that although Balfour Beatty is such a large company, I still regularly bump into friends from university, especially during graduate events and networking days.

This role has exceeded my expectations, as I didn't realise how enjoyable and varied being a Site Engineer would be. Every day is different, and I've gained experience both on site and in the office.
