Overview of Role

Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis.

I worked as a System Design & Verification Intern at Arm, developing tooling to resolve global namespace collisions between Verilog modules across hardware IP blocks. Day to day, I analysed existing design flows, implemented and tested scripts, investigated edge cases, and worked with engineers to ensure the solution integrated reliably.

Were you given much responsibility during your placement / internship?

Yes. I was given ownership of a technically complex problem rather than a narrowly defined support task. I was responsible for designing the approach, implementing the tooling, testing it against realistic cases, and iterating on edge cases, while seeking feedback from experienced engineers when needed.

Skills Development

Have you learnt any new skills, or developed your existing skills?

I strengthened my skills in Verilog, scripting, debugging and systematic problem-solving while working on tooling for complex hardware designs. I also developed a better understanding of large-scale design and verification workflows, and improved my ability to reason about edge cases and turn technical requirements into robust solutions.

How much support and guidance did you receive during your placement / internship?

I received regular support from experienced engineers, particularly when understanding Arm’s design flows and discussing technical decisions. At the same time, I was given the independence to investigate problems and develop solutions myself, with guidance available when I encountered unfamiliar concepts or needed feedback on my approach.

Company Culture

What was the company culture and general atmosphere like?

The culture at Arm was collaborative, supportive and technically focused. Engineers were approachable and willing to share their expertise, while interns were trusted to work independently and contribute meaningfully. The atmosphere was professional but welcoming, which made it easy to ask questions, discuss ideas and learn from the team.

I thoroughly enjoyed my internship at Arm. I particularly valued the opportunity to work on challenging technical problems with real-world impact, while learning from experienced engineers. The combination of meaningful responsibility, independence and a supportive team made the placement both enjoyable and highly valuable.

What advice would you give to others applying to Arm

I would recommend having strong technical fundamentals, being comfortable explaining your problem-solving process, and showing genuine curiosity about how large-scale systems work. Once there, be proactive in asking questions and taking ownership of unfamiliar problems, as the internship offers plenty of opportunities to learn independently.
