Legal Intern Review

My role as a Legal Intern involved supporting lawyers across the firm on a range of legal and commercial matters. On a day-to-day basis, I conducted legal and commercial research, reviewed documents and contracts, assisted with case preparation and contributed to internal projects. I also attended meetings and events, gaining insight into client relationships, business development and the wider commercial environment. Alongside my legal work, I participated in the firm’s pro bono programme, volunteering with The Magpie Project. The role involved managing multiple priorities, working across different teams and developing my understanding of how a large international law firm operates.

Yes, I was given a good level of responsibility throughout my internship. I was trusted to work independently on research tasks, review documents and contribute to ongoing matters and internal projects. I was also encouraged to take ownership of tasks while having support available whenever I needed it. The responsibility increased as I became more familiar with the work, which helped me develop my confidence, judgement and ability to manage my time effectively.

Yes, I developed a wide range of skills during my internship. I strengthened my legal research, analytical and written communication skills, while also developing my ability to review documents carefully and approach tasks with greater commercial awareness. I also improved my organisation and time-management skills through managing multiple tasks and deadlines. Working alongside different teams helped me become more confident communicating with colleagues and asking questions, while the pro bono experience further developed my communication and interpersonal skills.

I received a lot of support and guidance throughout my internship. My buddy, mentor and supervisor were all extremely approachable and supportive and I had regular opportunities to check in with them, ask questions and discuss my progress. The Early Careers team were also very supportive throughout the placement and were always available when I needed guidance or had any questions. I felt well supported while still being given the independence to take responsibility for my work.

The company culture and general atmosphere were really positive. I found everyone to be approachable and willing to take the time to answer questions or offer guidance, regardless of their role or level of experience. I felt comfortable asking questions and speaking to different people across the firm. Everyone was extremely knowledgeable and passionate about what they did, while also being supportive and welcoming, which created a really friendly and collaborative environment.

I really enjoyed my internship and found it to be a very rewarding experience. I enjoyed the variety of the work, the opportunity to learn from experienced colleagues and being able to contribute to real work. I particularly valued the people I worked with and the supportive culture across the firm. Overall, the internship gave me a much better understanding of working in a commercial law firm and was an experience I thoroughly enjoyed.
