Overview of Role
Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis.
My role was within the FACTS and Protection team which focused on the design and testing of protection relays used within the England and Wales transmission system. Day-to-day involved using internal databases to identify redundant data held on transformers.
Were you given much responsibility during your placement / internship?
Being my first placement with National Grid, there was less sense of responsibility than is present in more veteran scholars. However, there were plenty of opportunities for independent thinking and researching.

Skills Development
Have you learnt any new skills, or developed your existing skills?
Working in an office developed my people skills as well as presenting skills as I was often tasked with presenting my findings to relevant parties. I was able to get a first-hand look at how engineers act in the field and specific roles and responsibilities they undertake within the power industry.

You do not need to be an expert in power engineering to succeed at National Grid, there are so many opportunities and places where your talents and interests can shine. Do not be afraid to suggest ideas as often they are explored despite the outcome.
