Pre-Clinical Sciences Intern Review

My role is laboratory based and revolves around cell culture. In a busy week, I would be in the lab every day for at least a few hours, and on a quieter week I might only need to be in for around an hour, three times a week to maintain the cells. I generally do not have a lot of office based work, unless I have data to analyse, or meetings other than weekly team meetings.

Yes, I was responsible for my project entirely. I also was given other responsibilities within the team. Additionally, there were opportunities across the year given by the Placement Team to volunteer and take responsibility for tasks.

I have learnt many new skills in the lab, the main one being cell culture techniques. I have also had a lot of exposure to different machines and assays. Additionally, I built up a professional network within the business that was extremely useful. Understanding corporate culture was a definite personal development.

Lots of support. The Placement Team provided a huge amount of help and many opportunities throughout the year. In addition to this team and my line manager, I was paired with a Team Buddy, and Mentor. Furthermore, I made contacts through networking that were more than happy to help guide me through the year and proved extremely helpful.

Lovely atmosphere - it was astonishing when I first joined that everyone I saw was happy and smiling, I barely see a long face in the office at all. All employees on site were very welcoming, friendly, and willing to help with anything and everything.

I really enjoyed my placement massively, it has been incredibly valuable both personally and professionally. It far exceeded my expectations for the year.
