Overview of Role
Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis.
As the environmental summer placement I was involved with/responsible for a gap analysis of the project's waste to date, daily dust inspections and monitoring using a handheld PM10 dust monitor, noise monitoring, watercourse inspections, assisting ecologists, weekly inspections, spills training, uploading data to monitor key performance indicators and soil plasticity and moisture tests.
Were you given much responsibility during your placement / internship?
I was given full responsibility for daily dust monitoring and recording this data. A gap analysis of the projects waste to date, compiling permits, registration numbers, waste transfer notes and consignment notes into a tracker.

Have you learnt any new skills, or developed your existing skills?
I learned several practical skills including dust, noise and water quality monitoring. I learned what to pick up on during environmental inspections, and developed knowledge and skills on several areas including soil, ecology, pollution events and reporting and key performance indicator reporting.

How much support and guidance did you receive during your placement / internship?
I received lots of support and guidance from the whole team. I felt able to ask for additional support and guidance if I needed it.
Despite the team not being informed I was coming until the week of my placement, giving them little time to prepare, they were still able to help me develop skills and knowledge from the very beginning, finding me a wide variety of things to do.
