Overview of Role

Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis.

This role revolved around fluid mechanical test rig design and build for fuel systems. A very unqiue role in the industry where you experience the entire design life cycle. From a demand/requirement to creating concepts to designing/CAD/modelling to build/manufacture/procurement to commissiong and testing. It is one of the only places in the business where you can experience all of this. On the day-to-day, I could be involved on anyone one of those steps, depending on their maturity in the product

Were you given much responsibility during your placement / internship?

Yes. After showing comptency early on I was able to land myself on bigger/more important projects which in turn lead me to having the same responsibilities similar to that of a full time worker. However, I was still given time to develop my other skills and be part of many organising groups for office events.

Skills Development

Have you learnt any new skills, or developed your existing skills?

I have been able to develop my 3D CAD skills, supplier communication, research and general design. The design aspect has been a very core skill hat I have been able to develop. From bringing in real life situations regarding manufacturability, supply, cost and safety. I have learnt to be very thorough in my high level decision making. Additional to this, I have developed my social and teamwork skills.

Support and Guidance

How much support and guidance did you receive during your placement / internship?

Support and guidance was readily available. With the no individual office philosophy, everyone works collectively on 'hot desks'. This is an excellent way to transfer knowledge and ask quick questions to get that guidance and support whenever it is needed

Company Culture

What was the company culture and general atmosphere like?

The company culture was definitely a bit of a mix. With some teams working very hard and showing extended passion in their work while some teams took a more relaxed approach due to a lack of deadlines. Generally it was all good in terms of working etiquette and creating a friendly environment.
