Systems Installation Design Engineering Intern Review

A role in Systems Installation Design exposed me to the full design lifecycle from R&D and initial feasibility developments through to continuous project developments/modifications and in-service support for all of the Airbus Commercial Aircraft programmes.
With this placement being cross programme, I was exposed to multiple different design philosophies where I have developed a significant understanding of the fuel system architectures.
Day to day, I get hands on concept design and CAD modelling experience in collaborative project environments as well as investigations into in-service reports and existing designs to support customers and the production lines by implementing design improvements.

I was entrusted to individually lay the groundwork for two major ongoing design projects for my team and have since on-boarded/lead other team members as the projects gained more traction within the business. I was given the freedom to learn through my own research and mistakes but had continuous support from the team when needed.

I feel I have developed both technically and professionally across my placement. Throughout the design processes I was part of, I have been challenged to present clear and concise ideas to large groups of stakeholders from across the business. This demanded development of a robust technical understanding of the fuel system and wider aircraft environment to back up proposals with clear engineering reasoning when communicating at design reviews.
Through my daily activities, I have primarily developed my engineering judgement and communication skills when tackling unfamiliar design projects alongside my ability to deal with setbacks when things do not initially go to plan. I have also had opportunity to develop my CAD modelling skills through formal tuition during my time with Airbus

I feel that Airbus has an extremely supportive company culture. Everyone that I contacted during my placement was more than happy to answer any questions or point me in the right direction which was extremely helpful as I found my feet in the role. I have also received significant exposure to other job roles during my placement through dedicated networking events and one-on-one chats with department leads where I had an interest.
There is an extensive placement support network through dedicated early careers points of contact and placement owners who genuinely want to see you develop the technical and soft skills on the way to become an engineering leader in the future. There is also a strong social network of other early careers (Apprentices, Interns, Grads) as well.

My placement exceeded my expectations and has allowed me to grow greatly upon my university experiences. Each day brought new challenges and opportunities which allowed me to continuously develop and meet new people. I feel going forwards I will be significantly more confident when entering long term projects and presenting proposals to stakeholders both inside and outside of technical engineering fields
