Summer Vacation Scheme Review

The vacation scheme provided a comprehensive insight into the day-to-day work of a commercial law firm. Each day combined networking opportunities, panel discussions and practice area presentations with interactive workshops, allowing me to learn about the firm's work, culture and clients. Alongside these sessions, I sat with an associate trainer and completed real legal tasks, including legal research and drafting, which gave me practical experience of the firm's work and the opportunity to receive feedback. Regular conversations with trainees, associates and partners also gave me a valuable understanding of a career in commercial law at A&O Shearman.

It gave me a much clearer understanding of A&O Shearman's business and the range of roles available within the firm. Before the scheme, it was difficult to appreciate the differences between practice areas and the smaller teams within them, beyond their broad descriptions. Speaking with lawyers across the firm helped me understand the day-to-day work of each team, how different practice areas support clients, and where my own interests are best aligned.

The scheme helped me develop both my technical and interpersonal skills. Through completing real legal tasks, I strengthened my legal research and drafting skills, particularly learning how to structure clear, concise advice emails for clients. I also gained experience using A&O Shearman's AI tools to support legal research more efficiently. There were panels about 'how to make the most of your vac scheme' and Q&As with senior people in the firm, where advice about soft and interpersonal skills was shared. The training and feedback given was sufficient for the length and expectations of a vacation scheme.

The culture at A&O Shearman was welcoming, collaborative and genuinely supportive. Everyone I met, from trainees to partners, was enthusiastic about their work and generous with their time. In my practice area, team members regularly invited me for coffee to explain key legal concepts and answer my questions, which I particularly appreciated as someone without a legal background. My trainers, in particular, both took lots of time to explain the legal/ financial landscape comprehensively. People were approachable and keen to involve me in discussions, creating an environment where I felt comfortable asking questions and learning from those around me. The panel sessions, networking events and socials also reflected a positive atmosphere, with people who genuinely enjoyed their work and were happy to share their experiences and career advice.

It was motivating to spend the week alongside a cohort of like-minded people who were equally curious about a career in law and engaged. It was great to learn from inspiring trainees, associates and partners who had once been in a similar position themselves. The opportunity to contribute to real work for the firm made the experience particularly rewarding, as it allowed me to apply my skills in a practical setting and gain a genuine insight into life as a commercial lawyer.
