Overview of Role

Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis.

In my role as a Sandwich Placement Student in the Valuation team, the nature of my work was very busy, yet rewarding. I organised and attended inspections, confidently measuring properties and taking detailed inspection notes. I independently wrote Red Book valuation reports, conducting due diligence, reviewing title documents and identifying comparable evidence. Having researched comparable properties, I also spoke to local agents to have a better understanding of the area's market and their opinions on value. I successfully maintained strong relationships with clients, delivering reports in a timely manner.

Were you given much responsibility during your placement / internship?

Yes, I managed to independently write Red Book valuation reports with my line manager reviewing them before sending to clients. I had the opportunity to experience the entire Red Book valuation process from start to finish, taking ownership of the work while receiving guidance and feedback where needed. From occasionally quoting on jobs and organising inspections to sending the final reports, I was given a high level of responsibility from an early stage and thoroughly enjoyed it. Throughout the process, I regularly communicated with lenders, borrowers, and local agents, while maintaining positive professional relationships.
This opportunity allowed me to enhance skills including independence, communication, problem-solving, networking and, most importantly, confidence.

Skills Development

Have you learnt any new skills, or developed your existing skills?

Yes, I developed a range of new skills and strengthened many of my existing ones throughout my placement. I improved my communication and collaboration skills by working with colleagues across the Valuation team as well as with other departments within the business, such as the Sales and Lettings teams. I also enhanced my problem-solving, time management and organisational abilities through managing tasks and contributing to a variety of projects.
In addition, I was able to apply the knowledge from my university course in a professional environment, helping to bridge the gap between my academic study and industry practice. I enhanced valuable technical knowledge and practical experience, particularly with Excel and various Savills-specific technology, which increased my confidence.
Overall, my placement year has been highly beneficial for both my personal and professional development and has provided me with a strong foundation for my career.

Support and Guidance

How much support and guidance did you receive during your placement / internship?

At the beginning of my placement, I received guidance from graduates and newly qualified surveyors, which helped me understand the various systems and processes used within the team. Additionally, I was assigned a supervisor and a counsellor throughout my placement, who were able to provide support and answer any APC-related questions.
Having benefitted from this support at an early stage of my placement, I have taken the initiative to assist future graduates, apprentices and placement students joining the Valuation team by creating a guide to the systems I have used for the last year. I hope this will help settle into the work more quickly and confidently.
