Overview of Role

Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis.

As a Summer Intern within the Mechanical & Electrical (M&E) Consultancy team at Savills, I supported consultants across a range of commercial property projects, gaining exposure to different RIBA stages and building services systems. The role involved assisting with technical and administrative project tasks, including building audits, feasibility studies, electrical calculations, duct and pipe sizing exercises, drawing reviews, and document management using industry software such as Bluebeam and Revit.

Were you given much responsibility during your placement / internship?

During my internship, I wasn't given a large amount of responsibility, which was understandable given the short duration of the placement and my limited prior experience. However, I was trusted to contribute to several real projects and complete tasks independently once I had been shown the required processes.
For example, I attended site visits and audits, where I was expected to observe building services systems, take notes, and contribute to data collection. I was also given responsibility for producing sections of reports, including contributing to a feasibility report for Beaumont Shopping Centre's fire alarm systems. In addition, I completed drawing reviews, measurements, file management tasks, and duct and pipe sizing exercises that formed part of live project work.
While the level of responsibility was not extensive, I felt that the trust placed in me to support project delivery and produce work that would be reviewed by consultants helped me develop my confidence, communication skills, and understanding of the M&E consultancy profession.

Skills Development

Have you learnt any new skills, or developed your existing skills?

Throughout the internship, I developed a stronger understanding of the consultancy process and the various project types undertaken by the team. I improved my communication skills and confidence by working closely with consultants, asking questions proactively, and contributing to project discussions. The experience also provided valuable insight into building auditing and the key mechanical, electrical, and fire safety systems that must be assessed within commercial properties.

Support and Guidance

How much support and guidance did you receive during your placement / internship?

I received a huge amount of support throughout my internship. The whole team were very friendly and approachable and would be checking in on me throughout my time here. When we were set tasks we would get a clear overview of what was needed and how to complete it. And our mentors were checking on us every other day we would see them to check how we are and what projects we were involved in.

Company Culture

What was the company culture and general atmosphere like?

Every person in the team is very welcoming, approachable and easy to talk to. On our first day we had a welcome coffee break to properly be introduced to the team which was really nice and comforting. The office atmosphere is a great mix of hard work but also friendly people to speak with. There was also lots of out of office socials which were great fun such as a summer bbq, M&E summer social at pool house and a 7 aside football tournament.

Recommendations & Advice

Would you recommend Savills to a friend?

Yes

What advice would you give to others applying to Savills

My advice to anyone applying for an internship at Savills would be to show genuine enthusiasm, be willing to learn, and ask plenty of questions. You don't need to know everything about the industry before you start, but having an interest or some base knowledge in property and building services will help. The most important thing is to be yourself and show a bit of personality, that's what they look for.
