Overview of Role

Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis.

Reading through dilapidation schedules, analysing schedules of work to identify correct defects, pricing and negotiation. Site visits to survey the condition of buildings, snagging, contract administrative work and question and answer testing on topics and subject related to dilapidations and building surveying in a broader context. Additionally, there were opportunities for independent research into career prospects with the company, departmental Teams meetings, as well as departmental lunches and breakfasts with directors, senior individuals and graduates.

Were you given much responsibility during your placement / internship?

Yes, there were opportunities for me to help in the design and construction of floor plans, taking photos for site visits that could be used for final report gathering. I was given a chance to do preliminaries for a JCT contract using NBS Chorus - this was very interesting as I did not know there were applications that could be used to build the development of a contract.

Skills Development

Have you learnt any new skills, or developed your existing skills?

Yes, cogent report writing, developing effective prompts through using Copilot to get work completed, how to spot issues on site visits, different types of partitions in a building, types of carpets used in offices in comparison to a residential building and generic problems that can occur with a building after a set amount of years. Additionally, how to use NBS Chorus, the difference between tenant and landlord clauses, the importance of snagging, how to draw a floor plan free-hand and the relevance measurements for pricings and costings.

Support and Guidance

How much support and guidance did you receive during your placement / internship?

Everybody were helpful in relation to any questions or feedback I needed. There were options to even speak with senior managers and directors - this would not typically happen at other companies. This is a fantastic scheme and would recommend this to anybody looking to get into one of the varying fields in Building Surveying.

Overall Experience

To what extent did you enjoy your placement / internship?

It has been helpful in me understanding Building Surveying in more depth than I would have if I had not done the Summer Scheme. Everybody has been great and have established new relationships with some great people. Work-wise, you will get work, but it is always good to go to different members of the team to see what they have available to work on.

Recommendations & Advice

Would you recommend Savills to a friend?

Yes

What advice would you give to others applying to Savills

When making your application, do not be afraid to use AI for your personal statement. Obviously, do not ask AI to do everything for you, ensure AI tidies up your application to get the best chance of having your application considered. Ensure your CV is professional without mistakes.
The biggest tip I can give is master the Assessment Centre!!!!! Dress professional and as soon as you get to the building, start talking with any and everybody. Show you are social, willing to develop relationships with as many people as you can. When put into your groups for the assessment the questions during the assessment, you will likely be put into groups of 8, maybe less. Do you best to listen to the answers of those in your group. Do not tell them they are wrong or over talk. Contribute where necessary and if you do feel somebody is wrong, suggest alternative ideas, do not shoot any down as there aren't any wrong or right answers. Lastly and most important, there will be a networking segment with members of the company at the end of the Assessment Centre - network. Don't be afraid Grab a notepad, a pen and take notes. They have really good advice to give and they love to see engagement and eagerness.
