Summer Insurance Intern Review

I was involved in all aspects of the company's work, from insurance to risk management to consulting. I would participate in meetings to discuss tasks. I would go away and do either independent work or team work and then feed back to my managers and wider team in meetings. I would participate in client conference calls to liaise with client on their requirements. I would maintain several models in Excel advising on the risks to businesses.

I was given a lot of responsibility during my internship. For instance, I was responsible for the maintenance of several models in Excel, used to generate market insights reports advising on the risks associated with over 50 different energy suppliers. I was trusted to speak to clients about their requirements and to feed this back to senior management. I was also given the chance to reach other interns on tasks that I had familiarised myself with.

I have gained a lot of skills as I begin my career. I learnt how to present my work in Excel and Powerpoint. I learnt a lot of soft skills in public speaking, communicating with other people and how to conduct myself in a business environment. I was previously very unconfident with Excel but now I know that googling is an acceptable solution. I have learnt how to speak proper to other people in a formal way.

I received a lot of support and guidance during my internship. This stemmed from simple encouragement to practical training on things such as Excel and Powerpoint. I attended public speaking workshops. I was also given a chance to support other interns on their processes. This made for a very positive working environment where we were able to bounce ideas off each other and learn from one another. I also enjoyed received plenty of feedback from my colleagues.

The company culture was great. There was a young and dynamic team in my team, but also a lot of experience that we could drawn on when we needed help. Legal and General have a really good reputation in the insurance, risk management and consulting industries, and this is down in large part to the incredible culture that has been created. Everyone within the organisation feels like they have a significant part to play in the business.

I really enjoyed my internship at Legal and General. It was a good opportunity for me to gain the skills necessary to land a full time job within the industry. I learnt a lot about how to collaborate with others, work individually and about the industry in general. I was impressed by the level of attention given to us by managers, which shows how highly the firm values interns and their work, and would be open to returning to them in future.
