Overview of Role

Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis.

As a participant in the WTW Level Up programme, my role was to engage in workshops and interactive activities designed to develop professional and technical skills. Day-to-day during the programme, I took part in problem-solving exercises, networking sessions, employability workshops, interview preparation using the STAR method, discussions on client excellence and personal branding, and a careers fair where I learned about different business areas within WTW. The programme involved collaborating with peers, learning from WTW professionals, and developing skills that will support future internship and graduate applications.

Were you given much responsibility during your placement / internship?

As this was an insight programme rather than a traditional placement or internship, I was not given responsibility for live client work. However, I was expected to actively participate in workshops, collaborate with other participants on team activities, contribute to discussions, and complete problem-solving exercises. I also took responsibility for networking with WTW professionals, asking questions during panel sessions, and engaging in activities focused on employability, client excellence, and interview preparation. These responsibilities helped me develop teamwork, communication, and professional skills in a business environment.

Skills Development

Have you learnt any new skills, or developed your existing skills?

Yes, I developed several new skills and strengthened existing ones throughout the programme. I improved my problem-solving skills by working through structured business scenarios and learned how to approach challenges in a logical and analytical way. The networking sessions helped me build confidence in communicating with professionals and making meaningful connections. I also developed my interview skills by learning how to structure competency-based answers using the STAR method. In addition, the sessions on client excellence enhanced my active listening and communication skills, while the personal branding workshop gave me a better understanding of how to present myself professionally. Overall, the programme increased my confidence, teamwork, and understanding of the professional skills needed to succeed in a corporate environment.

Support and Guidance

How much support and guidance did you receive during your placement / internship?

During the WTW Level Up programme, I received strong and structured support throughout the experience. From the start, the Early Careers team provided clear guidance during the welcome session and ensured we understood the purpose and expectations of the programme.
The learning modules and workshops, such as Client Excellence and the STAR interview session, were interactive and well-supported, with facilitators explaining concepts clearly and encouraging questions and participation. This made it easy to engage, even when covering new or unfamiliar topics.
In addition, sessions like Personal Brand & Personal Impact and the Mini Careers Fair provided exposure to different teams and professionals across WTW, which helped broaden my understanding of the business while still having guidance available from programme leaders.
Overall, the support was well-structured and consistent throughout the programme, but we were also encouraged to take ownership of our learning, especially during activities and discussions. This balance helped me build confidence, improve my communication skills, and become more independent in how I approach tasks and professional development.

Company Culture

What was the company culture and general atmosphere like?

WTW's company culture centres on collaboration, integrity, and continuous professional development, with a strong emphasis on working across business lines, geographies, and functions to deliver client-focused solutions. The firm fosters an inclusive environment supported by seven Colleague Inclusion Networks, and employees consistently highlight genuine flexibility, approachable management, and strong peer support as defining features of working there. This is reflected in employee satisfaction data, with WTW rated 3.9 out of 5 for culture and values and 77% of employees recommending it to a friend. While, like many large global consultancies, WTW experiences periods of intense workload and complex matrix structures, this is balanced by genuine investment in learning and development, broad exposure to multiple lines of business, and a collegial, growth-oriented atmosphere — all of which were clearly reflected in the structure of the Level Up programme itself, through its emphasis on networking, mentorship from former participants, and cross-LOB exposure.

Overall Experience

To what extent did you enjoy your placement / internship?

The Level Up programme genuinely exceeded my expectations. What I valued most was how deliberately WTW designed the two days around both skill-building and authenticity — the Problem Solving and Client Excellence sessions weren't abstract theory, but practical frameworks I could immediately picture applying. The STAR interview workshop in particular gave me a much clearer structure for articulating my own experiences, something I know will stay useful well beyond this programme. But it was the human side of the experience that really made it memorable: the panel with former Level Up participants felt candid rather than rehearsed, and gave me an honest sense of what the transition from candidate to colleague actually looks like at WTW. The Mini Careers Fair was similarly valuable, opening my eyes to Lines of Business I hadn't previously considered. Even in a virtual format, there was a real sense of warmth between participants — the social activity and informal moments throughout the two days made it feel collaborative rather than transactional. Coming out of it, I left with a much stronger sense of WTW's culture, a genuine enthusiasm to apply for future opportunities, and tools I can carry into other interview processes.

Recommendations & Advice

Would you recommend WTW to a friend?

Yes

What advice would you give to others applying to WTW

My main advice would be to approach the programme with curiosity, not just preparation. The STAR workshop and Personal Brand session work best when you're reflecting honestly on your own experiences rather than relying on rehearsed answers. Make the most of the networking opportunities too — the panel with former Level Up participants is a great chance to ask candid questions you won't find answers to online. I'd also say go into the Careers Fair with an open mind, since WTW's range of Lines of Business means the right fit might surprise you. Above all, remember it's a two-way process: you're learning just as much about whether WTW suits you as they're learning about you, so ask questions that genuinely matter to you.
