Overview of Role

Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis.

Positioned within Personal Care (UKI), my role involves working across four of the category’s largest and most well-known brands: Dove, Sure, Lynx, and Radox. On a day-to-day basis, I collaborate closely with the media team and liaise with external agencies to support the execution of upcoming campaigns, ensuring they land effectively and align with brand objectives. Alongside this, I produce monthly competitor reports, analysing activity across the market to identify key trends, innovations, and opportunities. This involves regular social listening across platforms using tools such as Meltwater, enabling me to track competitor performance, monitor emerging conversations, and provide actionable insights to inform our media and content strategy.

Were you given much responsibility during your placement / internship?

Yes, I was given a high level of responsibility during my placement. I independently managed key tasks such as competitor reporting and supported the execution of major media campaigns, working closely with both internal teams and external agencies.

Skills Development

Have you learnt any new skills, or developed your existing skills?

Yes, throughout my placement I have both learned new skills and developed my existing ones. In particular, I have strengthened my analytical and critical thinking skills through producing monthly competitor reports and interpreting market trends. I have also improved my communication and stakeholder management by working closely with internal teams and external agencies, as well as building my confidence when contributing to meetings and presentations. Additionally, I have developed my technical skills through the use of tools such as Meltwater for social listening, enabling me to generate more data-driven insights to support campaign planning and strategy.

Support and Guidance

How much support and guidance did you receive during your placement / internship?

I received a strong level of support and guidance throughout my placement. I had twice-weekly 1-1 meetings with my line manager, which gave me regular opportunities to discuss progress, ask questions, and receive feedback on my work. Alongside this, I also took part in structured training sessions, such as the TV Masters course, which helped to build my knowledge of media planning and the wider industry. This combination of regular check-ins and training enabled me to develop my skills with confidence while gradually becoming more independent in my role.

Company Culture

What was the company culture and general atmosphere like?

The company culture was very welcoming and supportive, creating a positive and inclusive atmosphere. Everyone was approachable, helpful, and attentive, always willing to offer guidance or answer questions. There was a strong emphasis on collaboration, with colleagues keen to lend a hand and ensure new starters felt comfortable and well onboarded. This made it easy to settle in quickly and build confidence in my role.

Overall Experience

To what extent did you enjoy your placement / internship?

I thoroughly enjoyed my placement, as it has been an incredibly valuable learning experience. Over the year, I have developed both professionally and personally, gaining hands-on experience across a variety of projects and responsibilities. The fast-paced nature of the role, combined with the opportunity to work on well-known brands, made the experience both engaging and rewarding. Overall, it has been a really positive and enjoyable year that has helped shape my future career direction.

What advice would you give to others applying to Unilever

I would advise anyone applying to Unilever to stay proactive and aim to be a few steps ahead at all times. It’s important to show initiative, take ownership of your work, and be willing to get involved in a variety of projects. Being organised, curious, and open to learning will really help you stand out, as well as building strong relationships with those around you. Overall, having a positive attitude and a drive to grow makes a big difference in such a fast-paced environment.
