Overview of Role

Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis.
My role was to analyse samples of waste water for trace metals using ICP-MS including a microwave digestion, and to analyse effluent, solids, and filters for lead and polonium 210 using alpha and gamma spectrometry. I was also responsible for organising contaminated waste collection and processing analytical results. I followed samples from reception through to their contents being reported. Day-today tasks also include quality checks for equipment such as pipettes, balances, dispensettes, and the main analytical instruments.
Were you given much responsibility during your placement / internship?
Yes - I was responsible for regular maintenence tasks in the labs such as keeping workspaces tidy, cleaning glassware and re-useable equipment in a timely manor, checking samples have been correctly packaged before sending off, and correctly labelled upoon receipt. I was trained on three of the main analytical methods we run in our labs and was responsible for ensuring the quality of analysis was high and passed various criteria. I was in charge of organising hazardous waste collections. In the office, I had to check certificates of analysis before they were sent to customers and keep track of progess the labs were making.

Skills Development

Have you learnt any new skills, or developed your existing skills?
I've learned how to use ICP-MS, alpha and gamma spectrometers and how to assess quality of analysis for methods using those instruments. I've developed my scientific and every-day communication by working with people from a variety of backgrounds. I've learned about the steel-making processes and about how my work in the labs is relevant and important to what goes on elsewhere in the company. I have gained confidence from being given responsibilities and performing well throughout my placement.

Support and Guidance

How much support and guidance did you receive during your placement / internship?
I was part of a small team but everyone was happy to help me with anything I didn't understand or needed some guidance with. At the start of my placement most of my training was e-learning but after that was completed I had in-person training on the analytical methods and meetings with people from different departments so I could understand the meaningfulness of my work. I had a mentor that I could talk to at anytime and regular one-to-one meetings with my manager.

Company Culture

What was the company culture and general atmosphere like?
As I worked at a time after covid where most people were still working at home, it was tricky to imagine the atmosphere of a full office. There was a small team of around 6-10 people in everyday. We all got along and were friendly, helpful, and productive working with each other. The company had a clear focus on health and safety, with monthly meetings to review incidents company-wide and reflect on those, as well as thinking of improvements for our work environment. As the team was small, it was difficult to quickly implement changes - if you had an idea you would be listened to, but it would be largely up to you to arrange getting your idea into action.

Overall Experience

To what extent did you enjoy your placement / internship?
I really enjoyed my placement. I felt there was always something I could be getting on with, whether that be a task I was given or something I thought could be improved. I felt respected and valued by my team which gave me confidence in the work I was doing and made me comfortable to ask questions at any time. I liked the routine of working everyday, whilst having flexibility on working hours or the option to work from home one day a week if I needed to.

Recommendations & Advice

Would you recommend Tata Steel to a friend?
Yes
What advice would you give to others applying to Tata Steel
The role I had was in a small team. If you want to gain some experience in a lab or office environment and develop interpersonal and analytical skills, it is a good placement for you. As a longer term job your prospects may be limited because it is a small department so progression can only go so far. You will be a valued team member and have opporunities to help charities, give back to the community, develop your skills, and build professiional relationships.
