Overview of Role

Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis.

I worked as an Operations and Una Bot Analyst within Unilever’s Employee Technology team, operating at the intersection of data, tooling, and stakeholders. My role combined day-to-day operational support with longer-term improvement initiatives, particularly focused on self-service and automation.
On a daily basis, this involved analysing large volumes of service desk and chatbot data to identify performance trends and improvement opportunities, developing automated reporting solutions and scalable processes, and collaborating with internal teams and vendors to enhance Una bot performance and knowledge quality. In parallel, I supported BAU operations by maintaining dashboards, contributing to sprint activities, and helping ensure stable and efficient global service delivery.

Were you given much responsibility during your placement / internship?

Yes, I was given a significant level of responsibility throughout my placement. My role involved both day-to-day operational ownership and leading longer-term improvement initiatives, which required a high degree of accountability and independence.
I was responsible for maintaining key dashboards, supporting global operations, and contributing to sprint activities, as well as acting as an escalation point for Europe and other regions. Alongside this, I led automation and data analysis projects, built scalable solutions, and worked directly with internal stakeholders and external vendors to improve self-service and knowledge quality.
This combination of operational responsibility and project ownership meant I was trusted to deliver impact both in maintaining service stability and driving continuous improvement across the organisation.

Skills Development

Have you learnt any new skills, or developed your existing skills?

Yes, I developed a wide range of new skills and strengthened my existing ones during the placement. I significantly improved my data analysis skills by working with large datasets of chats, incidents, and bot interactions, focusing on identifying trends and turning insights into actionable improvements. I also enhanced my technical skills, particularly in Python, Power BI, and Power Automate, through building scalable automation and reporting solutions.
In addition, I developed strong stakeholder management and communication skills by working closely with internal teams and external vendors to align operational needs with business objectives. I also strengthened my problem-solving and analytical thinking, as much of my work required identifying root causes of issues and designing practical, data-driven solutions.
Overall, the placement helped me combine technical capability with business understanding, enabling me to deliver more impactful and scalable solutions.

Support and Guidance

How much support and guidance did you receive during your placement / internship?

I received a strong level of support and guidance throughout my placement.
This included regular check-ins and mentorship from my manager, alongside ongoing feedback and coaching conversations to support both my performance and development. In addition, I worked closely with global teams, stakeholders, and external vendors, which provided continuous guidance and collaboration in day-to-day work.
I was also supported through onboarding sessions, tool walkthroughs, and workshops, which helped me build the knowledge needed to perform effectively in the role. Overall, the support structure allowed me to develop confidence and independence over time, while still having access to guidance when needed.

Company Culture

What was the company culture and general atmosphere like?

The company culture was very friendly, inclusive, and supportive throughout my placement.
I genuinely felt that I was part of one of the best teams in the organisation — everyone was approachable, collaborative, and always willing to help. From the beginning, I was made to feel welcome and included, which made it much easier to settle in and contribute confidently.
There was a strong emphasis on teamwork and open communication, with regular collaboration across teams and stakeholders. This created a positive and engaging environment where everyone supported each other and worked towards shared goals.
Overall, the atmosphere was professional but also very welcoming, which made the experience both enjoyable and highly rewarding.

Overall Experience

To what extent did you enjoy your placement / internship?

I thoroughly enjoyed my placement and found it to be a very rewarding experience.
It gave me the opportunity to work on meaningful projects that delivered real impact, while also allowing me to grow both technically and professionally. I enjoyed the balance between day-to-day operations and longer-term improvement work, which kept the role varied and engaging.
In addition, the supportive team environment and strong collaboration across stakeholders made the experience even more positive. Overall, it was a highly valuable placement that significantly developed my skills and confidence, and confirmed my interest in pursuing a career in this area.

What advice would you give to others applying to Unilever

My main advice would be to show a genuine interest in the role and focus on how you can create impact, rather than just listing skills. During my placement, the work was very outcome-driven, so it is important to demonstrate how you can use your skills to solve real problems and add value.
I would also recommend being proactive and open to learning. The role involved working across different areas such as data, automation, and stakeholder management, so being adaptable and willing to step outside your comfort zone is key.
Finally, strong communication and collaboration are essential. A big part of the role involved working with global teams and stakeholders, so being able to clearly explain your ideas and work well with others will really help you succeed.
