Overview of Role

Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis.

As a Communications and Government Affairs (CGA) placement student, based in the Global Health department, my work varied day-to-day, however great support was provided. I focused on 3 pillars - Humanitarian Response, Operational Planning and Strategic Partnerships.
The Humanitarian element of my role consisted of: donating medicines and cash to L/LMIC countries without access to national healthcare, and those affected by climate and/or emergency situations. We also operate various programmes to support climate-related health threats, focusing on anticipatory action.
The Operational Support element of my role consisted of: Working alongside the Head of the team to lead and develop the creation of our annual Business Plan. This is a 50~ page document detailing our work, our processes, our governance etc. Included in this element of my role was also presenting monthly to the GHLT on the performance of our team, including KPIs.
The Strategic Partnerships element of my role consisted of: Working alongside the programme directors to seek new partnerships in our priority countries, with INGOs and community organisations. Administration assistance re meetings, minutes and actions, and concept note reviews, as well as reporting reviewing.
My tasks day-to-day varied greatly, however the overall pillars remained the same. This allowed me to focus on the long-term mission of our department, and provide an impact for those that need it. It was truly inspiring.

Were you given much responsibility during your placement / internship?

I was given great responsibility during my placement. I expected to be supporting various administration tasks, however my role had specific guidelines and responsibilities. It was a steep learning curve however I greatly appreciated the trust put into me. This allowed myself to grow both personally and professionally. I wouldn't recommend it more. The Global Health department ensured you felt like you were making a real impact.

Skills Development

Have you learnt any new skills, or developed your existing skills?

I have learnt a significant amount during this placement, both professionally and personally. As an example, my communication skills both in-person and digitally have significantly increased. My confidence in my work, and presenting to groups has drastically increased. My coding/excel skills have developed from the foundation up. I would say these are the main skills I have developed.

Company Culture

What was the company culture and general atmosphere like?

The culture at GSK is second to none. They focus on being 'ambitious for patients'. My department and the broader people I interacted with fostered a culture of great support. I joined various ERGs, supporting events with Uplift, the Culture Champions, and IP UNITE, an internal network focused on the development of placement students.

Overall Experience

To what extent did you enjoy your placement / internship?

i enjoyed my placement greatly. As someone with limited experience in global health, I came into the role slightly afraid. I picked up my tasks immediately and I am now seriously considering a role in this space post-grad. I wouldn't recommend it more. There are 100 IPs based at HQ which provides a culture of socialisation in and out of work, and wellness is prioritised at the office, allowing for a healthy work-life balance.
