Overview of Role

Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis.

An Industrial Placement student at Unilever works as a fully integrated member of a team, contributing to real business projects that have direct impact. Over a 12‑month placement, the role involves supporting day‑to‑day team activities, analysing data, collaborating across functions, and helping deliver project outcomes while developing both technical and professional skills. Placement students are given exposure to different areas of the business and are expected to apply their academic knowledge in practical settings, gaining hands‑on experience rather than simply shadowing others.

Were you given much responsibility during your placement / internship?

Throughout the placement, I was given increasing responsibility as I developed my skills and understanding of the business. Initially, I supported ongoing work and learned core processes, but over time I was trusted to take ownership of tasks and contribute more independently to projects. In the later stages, I was able to manage my own workstreams and deliver outputs that were used by the team, demonstrating accountability and building confidence in a professional setting.

Have you learnt any new skills, or developed your existing skills?

During my placement, I developed a range of new skills while also strengthening those I already had. I improved my technical skills through hands‑on work, such as analysing data, conducting experiments, and using industry tools, while also building stronger problem‑solving abilities by tackling real business challenges. In addition, I developed key soft skills, including communication, particularly when explaining complex ideas to non‑technical stakeholders, as well as teamwork and stakeholder management through collaborating with different functions. Overall, the experience enhanced both my technical competence and my confidence working in a professional environment.

Support and Guidance

How much support and guidance did you receive during your placement / internship?

Throughout my placement, I received strong support and guidance from my team and line manager, which played a key role in my development. I was provided with clear objectives, regular feedback through check‑ins and reviews, and access to experienced colleagues who were always willing to offer advice and answer questions. This supportive environment allowed me to build confidence, develop new skills, and take on increasing responsibility, knowing that help was available when needed.

What was the company culture and general atmosphere like?

The company culture at Unilever was supportive, collaborative, and purpose‑driven, making it a positive environment to work and learn in. To what extent did you enjoy your placement / internship?

I really enjoyed my placement, as it was both engaging and rewarding from start to finish. The opportunity to work on meaningful projects, develop new skills, and take on increasing responsibility made the experience particularly fulfilling. I also valued the supportive team environment and the chance to contribute to real business outcomes, which made the placement feel impactful and worthwhile overall.

What advice would you give to others applying to Unilever

My advice to others applying to Unilever would be to clearly show why you are interested in the company and how your values align with its purpose and the role you’re applying for. It’s important to do your research on Unilever’s brands, current initiatives, and the function you’ve chosen, and be prepared to discuss these confidently. During the application and interview process, focus on demonstrating your experiences using structured examples (such as the STAR method), highlighting the impact you made rather than just what you did. Additionally, be proactive, authentic, and open to learning, as Unilever values individuals who are willing to take initiative, contribute ideas, and make an impact from an early stage.
