Overview of Role

Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis.

Co-ordinate trials, for qualifying new materials, products & designs.
Lead site improvement projects,
lead production line improvement projects

Were you given much responsibility during your placement / internship?

Yes, I got to do all of the above independently, where I got to lead some big projects and get involved in a lot of meaningful work.

Skills Development

Have you learnt any new skills, or developed your existing skills?

Confidence- speaking to a lot of new personalities daily, as well as relationship building with contractors and suppliers, has seriously increased my confidence - I feel very comfortable meeting new people now.
Engineering and management skills- seen first hand how projects are managed, right from being premature to the final delivery... also seen and learnt technical skills around site (including wiring a mixer, changing over production lines, and assessing how a new product can be ran and thus making new machine parts with suppliers for it.

Support and Guidance

How much support and guidance did you receive during your placement / internship?

A lot, you have your immediate team, who will support you with the work and help whenever stuck... then your line manager is also there to provide additional support and check in on you now and then. also have a good careers network at Unilever where they provide a lot of extra details for you to know.

Company Culture

What was the company culture and general atmosphere like?

Great, a very much 'we're all in this together' approach, where hard work is the norm, but also having a laugh and socialising is.
I felt very warmly welcomed when i arrived, and it helped settle me in very quickly.

What advice would you give to others applying to Unilever

Ask questions and be curious, you need to really get yourself out there as much as possible, which may seem daunting but its simply just emailing someone for a bit of info about what they do, or maybe having a conversation with someone seeing what they do day to day, doing this you may hear someone doing jobs which sound up your street - if so its a great way to learn what you actually want to do.
