Overview of Role

Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis.

I initially had a strategy consulting role where I researched different AI technologies within telecom and made power points of how we can apply them to our own company.
I then started working as a business analyst on a couple different projects, helping to document processes, and aimed to improve manual processes through automation.
I then moved on to a more data analyst type and development type role, creating dashboards for better visibility on projects, and simple python scripts for automating tasks

Were you given much responsibility during your placement / internship?

At the start of the placement, I was not given much responsibility. When I moved teams, I started to get a little more. In order to get responsibility, I had to be proactive and assist teams wherever I could. I went out of my way to ask teams outside my department if there was anything I can help them with - this led me to working on projects I would otherwise have not worked on if I had just waited for work to come to me.

Support and Guidance

How much support and guidance did you receive during your placement / internship?

I received a lot of support and guidance during my placement. There were many levels of support:
1. Line manager
2. Intern buddy
3. Mentor
4. Support from future careers committee.
All 4 levels were very supportive regarding my growth, development and overall wellbeing.

Company Culture

What was the company culture and general atmosphere like?

The company culture was extremely friendly and welcoming. Being an intern, you had the opportunity to go out and speak to anybody and people are willing to give you their time. Silly questions are encouraged. It's comfortable for you to speak up in meetings and mention if you disagree with an idea.

Overall Experience

To what extent did you enjoy your placement / internship?

I really enjoyed my placement at Virgin Media O2. I got to work in many different projects and develop a multitude of skills, all while expanding my network and meeting a wide range of people with different positions and skill sets.
I would have hoped to get a little more hands on work, and contribute to further meaningful projects. There were several dry periods where there was no work to do, and in order to make most of my time, I did courses on Skillsoft to develop my technical skills.
I feel I could have been a more useful addition to the team if I was given more work to do and a little training to help me do it.

Would you recommend Virgin Media O2 to a friend?

Yes

What advice would you give to others applying to Virgin Media O2

I would tell them that it's a great company to work with. It's such a big company, so be sure to network and meet a lot of people. Because it's a big company, in order to increase your visibility, and know more about our wide range of products and services, it's important to put yourself out there and ask a lot of questions.
I'd also advise them to be proactive. There will be periods where there is not much work, so don't just wait around; ask your line manager, your team or mentor for anything else you can work on.
