Overview of the Role

Overall, how would you describe your experience at BAE Systems?

Excellent! The job role is as expected, is challenging in a good way to develop me and is very interesting. Other graduates have had worse/better experiences, depending on which role they were placed in, but if you use your time to network and find a role you'll like, you can happily exit the scheme into a different role.

What are the main responsibilities of the role and which elements of the role do you enjoy the most?

I am designing systems using cameo and helping to support process development. I really enjoy the design aspect as it is a mix of creativity and engineering and I have a lot of autonomy in my role.

To what extent does your role give you the opportunity to contribute meaningfully and feel valued by your team?

5/5
I have my own task which contributes an equal amount as the rest of the team and I am trusted to do important work.

How does your compensation package - including perks & benefits - fairly remunerate you for the work you do?

4/5
It is great for a graduate scheme whilst developing, but I feel I will be more happily compensated when I am off-scheme and being paid for the grade which my job role reflects.

How well do you feel the role is preparing you for your future career?

4/5
Excellent - it is showing me my strengths and weaknesses and has shown me what I might want my career to look like in future

How would you rate the extent to which you were developing new or existing skills through formal training and your day-to-day role?

5/5
I started off with no aerospace or systems engineering knowledge and now feel like I can make some engineering judgements and have had a range of experiences through the V-cycle that make me feel like a junior systems engineer.

Experience & Company Culture

How is the support you receive?

5/5
I have an excellent line manager and team - they make time if I have any graduate work I need their input to, they listen if my work load is too high/low and adjust accordingly and involve me as a standard member of the team, not like a graduate. I would say my line manager may be one grade too high as she has less time for me recently, but there are talks of a team restructure as this has been noticed by them already.

How is your work-life balance?

4/5
Great, flexi-time is brilliant. My only issue is my commute time but that is self-inflicted as the pay is enough to move closer to the job.

What is the organisational culture, values and general atmosphere like?

How would you rate BAE Systems initiatives when it comes to equality, diversity, inclusion and accessibility?

How would you rate BAE Systems CSR (Corporate Social Responsibility) initiatives?

Recommendations & Advice

Would you recommend BAE Systems to a friend?

Yes

Why?

Yes it is an amazing supportive company, with lots of perks. It gives you access to a huge range of people - from young apprentices to older experienced engineers and you have so much opportunity to move around and change job roles according to your preference. There are clear routes to grow your career and the company is full of happy, positive, curious people.

How well did the role match your expectations based on the recruitment process?

5/5

When considering the recruitment & onboarding process, have you any specific tips or advice you would give to others applying to BAE Systems?

Be open to learning. Go into the interview knowing the core components of the role such as the V-cycle and through life management from design to waste for systems engineering. Try to grasp an overarching understanding of the business as a whole and how all of the products form the larger picture. Just be a happy positive inquisitive person and be yourself!
