Graduate Materials Engineer Review

I would described the graduate scheme at BAE Systems as very good. Since starting it doesn't feel like I am part of a graduate scheme really and just gone straight into the business. I am lucky to have great support from my team and it is the role where I feel I am best suited.

- A lot of my role is looking into the development and evaluation of materials.
- Engaging with suppliers to discuss requirements and development programmes of work as they progress.
- Literature review of past/current materials, testing documents and reports to evaluate materials on how/why they performed as they did before looking into the next steps.
- Helping other departments with material based queries.

It is definitely the field of work I want to be in and is setting me up well for a future career within materials.

I have a good work support system in terms of a good team who are very supportive. I also have a mentor who sits within the field too.

Work load definitely comes in waves and is usually quite busy but it a good balance of being able to log off and not taking it home after a good day in the office.

For me personally it has been the career step I needed to take in terms of coming from an academic world into the industrial world. Doing the graduate scheme has allowed me to develop that industrial experience and working with units/sectors which I wouldn't have worked with in the past whilst bringing and expanding my technical knowledge. I think its a great fit for anyone looking to do the same jump.

I think I have been very fortunate in what I had in terms of expecting the field I have landed, slight differences to what I was expecting to do in day in day out.
