Overview of the Role

Overall, how would you describe your experience at National Grid?

National Grid are very big on development and learning. Across my all of my three placements I had the opportunity to learn. As part of their grad scheme, there is a variety of training courses ranging from technical transmission and substation knowledge, first aid, health and safety such as IOSH, as well as development training across the 18 month program.
National Grid believe in your wellbeing. Offer support from both your manager and many resources available. The culture of the business is very inviting and you can tell they care about you.
The work varies depending on what teams you are in. Someone in the same role as you could be working on very different things. There is so many opportunities to explore. As part of the grad scheme you also have the opportunity to volunteer for different events such as school talks and STEM lessons, through to supporting the early careers team with graduate assessment centres and induction days.
I've learnt so much about an industry I had no experience in, and never was made to feel daft for not knowing something. Questions are always welcomed.

What are the main responsibilities of the role and which elements of the role do you enjoy the most?

Across my 18 month program I had three 6 month placements. My first placement I was a Graduate Associate Project Manager within an onshore transmission team. Due to the amount of training I was giving the risk register to lead on. It gave me an opportunity to learn so much of the project, as I collated the new risks and mitigations into the risk register. Assessing the risks with risk owners for their impact to finical and programme implications. I held monthly updates with risk owners to check the progression of the risk, to see if the mitigations had helped or if new developments had caused a greater risk. Also, adding new risks as needed. I worked alongside the senior project manager to consolidate the risk register for risks that had the same outcomes.
My second placement was on a project in delivery where I worked across the stakeholder management and involved in the day to day running of the project.
My 3rd placement was a Grad Quantity Surveyor on Eastern Green Link 2. I was responsible for the payment assessments, analyzing compensation events and the contract management through FastDraft.
