Overview of the Role

Overall, how would you describe your experience at BAE Systems?
My experience of the graduate scheme at BAE systems has been mixed. I am came into the company as a systems engineer and when I arrived, I had not been assigned a job role yet and then consequently i got put into Integration as there was room there. Bear in mind I had completed a summer internship and a year in industry with the company in which they had asked what I wanted to do when I came back to the company, I was placed in a team that i was contracted for and that they had on record was not a good fit for me. Since being in the team I have worked hard and tried my best and I am given alot of work which is good and I am busy I like it in that sense but the actual job role is not what i applied to do. The scope for growth and movement around the company is very good and after the grad scheme I do plan to stay at the company but just move role which is possible. Overall i would give my experience a 6/10 but that includes my time before graduating which makes a big chunk of the positive.
What are the main responsibilities of the role and which elements of the role do you enjoy the most?
My role is avionics integration engineer. This involves planning programme schedules, tracking work and seeing what teams are doing what and then reporting this to the customer. It involves lots of communication and chasing information for different people.
To what extent does your role give you the opportunity to contribute meaningfully and feel valued by your team?
3/5
I do contribute to the team but as it is not a team that produces work as such - it is hard to do so.
How does your compensation package - including perks & benefits - fairly remunerate you for the work you do?
5/5
The benefits such as pension and share are very good
How well do you feel the role is preparing you for your future career?
1/5
This is not the role i signed up for and not the role I want to do in the future. It is not what I want to do and does not prepare me for the technical roles that I want to be in, in the future
How would you rate the extent to which you were developing new or existing skills through formal training and your day-to-day role?
3/5
I am developing basic skills such as communication and professionalism which are good qualities but I am not improving any of the engineering skills i gained at University.

Experience & Company Culture

How is the support you receive?
3/5
The support is good if you know where to look
How is your work-life balance?
5/5
There is flexi time and i can remotely work 2 days a week so it is good for arranging your social life
What is the organisational culture, values and general atmosphere like?
4/5
good atmosphere but due to it being engineering it still needs to improve the diversity like any engineering company that is heavily male dominated
How would you rate BAE Systems initiatives when it comes to equality, diversity, inclusion and accessibility?
3/5
It promotes it alot but there is still an obvious gap in the amount of women in the office - not necessarily BAE fault, more an engineering wide problem.
How would you rate BAE Systems CSR (Corporate Social Responsibility) initiatives?
5/5
good socials and social reps

Recommendations & Advice

Would you recommend BAE Systems to a friend?
Yes
Why?
I would recommend it simply because it is a big company that you can move around in. I am not in the role i want but it is good pay and I know i can find a team that I want to be part of going forward
How well did the role match your expectations based on the recruitment process?
1/5
It didn't - i came in as a systems engineer and got put into integration and got an updated contract 2 weeks later
When considering the recruitment & onboarding process, have you any specific tips or advice you would give to others applying to BAE Systems?
Do not be set on a role or even an area as it might not happen but keep an open mind as once you are in the company you can then navigate your way to what you want.
