Systems Engineer Review

In a systems engineering role, I focus on designing and managing complex systems as a whole, making sure all components work together effectively to meet requirements. I define system needs, develop architectures, and coordinate across different engineering disciplines while overseeing integration, testing, and the full lifecycle. I also balance performance, cost, and risk, acting as a link between technical teams and stakeholders to ensure the final system is reliable and fit for purpose.

During my role, I took on genuine engineering responsibility, contributing directly to real project outcomes rather than just supporting tasks. I worked on industry‑leading projects, applying systems engineering principles to solve complex problems and support the development of advanced technologies. I was also responsible for completing work that formed part of deliverables provided to the client, ensuring it met professional and quality standards. This experience gave me exposure to high‑impact work, where performance, accuracy, and reliability were critical, and allowed me to operate as part of a professional engineering team.

From this role, I developed a broad range of skills combining my computer science background with engineering principles. I gained experience in requirements engineering, system design, and integration while developing an understanding of multidisciplinary systems involving hardware and software. I applied programming and analytical skills to solve complex engineering problems, supported modelling and simulation work, and developed a strong systems-thinking approach to evaluate trade-offs and interdependencies. I also built experience in producing technical documentation and client-facing deliverables, working to deadlines within structured engineering processes. Additionally, I strengthened my communication skills by collaborating across disciplines and improved my awareness of risk, quality, and professional standards.

During my industrial placement year, I received a high level of support that enabled me to grow both technically and professionally. I was given opportunities that felt once‑in‑a‑lifetime, allowing me to learn new skills, contribute to meaningful work, and gain hands-on experience with advanced technologies I would not have otherwise expected to use at this stage. I was also able to take part in high-level discussions, gaining valuable insight into real engineering decision-making processes, which helped build my confidence and understanding of the industry.

Everyone I worked with during my placement was approachable, supportive, and genuinely willing to help. There was a very positive team environment where people were always happy to take the time to stop, have a chat, and offer guidance whenever I needed it. This made it easy to ask questions, build relationships, and learn from experienced colleagues, which greatly enhanced both my confidence and overall experience.

I thoroughly enjoyed my placement year and found it to be an incredibly rewarding experience. It was a great opportunity to apply what I had learned in my studies to real-world projects while also developing new skills in a professional environment. The combination of challenging work, supportive colleagues, and exposure to advanced technologies made it both enjoyable and valuable, and it has given me greater confidence in pursuing a career in systems engineering.
