Overview of Role

Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:
5/5
I split my time between my health care support worker role and my nursing apprenticeship. when completing apprenticeship hours I use this time for off the job learning, study and placements. The support worker I work in clinics in our Outpatient department.
To what extent do you enjoy your programme?
5/5
I am enjoying the programme and all of the learning opportunities that I had so far. although I do find the academic side difficult. I can now look back to when I started and see how far I have come. Studying with the Open University works brilliantly for me as I can work and study in a way that suits a good work/family life balance. I am always able to access help when I need to and have been really well supported throughout by my line managers, the education team at Wye Valley NHS Trust and The Open University.

Skills Development

Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
5/5
I have developed many new skills so far in my training. I feel more confident in different situations, I can adapt to the areas I am working and my communication and management skills have developed. Clinically I am learning all of the time and will continue to develop in this area, not only within my apprenticeship but throughout my career through continuous development.

Structure and Support

How well organised/structured is your programme?
5/5
The Open University is very student lead, personally this works really well for me and I am very happy that this is the route I took. The programme is well structured and easy to navigate, the tutors have always been very helpful with any questions or support. The only downside of the course is you don't get to know/mix with fellow students in the same way as a face to face university, however this route and University are definitely the right for me.
How much support do you receive from your employer?
5/5
I cannot fault my employer at all. I have been really well supported by my managers and the education team. I know that if I am having any issues or need to talk I have a solid team I can go to for support. I am very grateful for the team I have around me.
How much support do you receive from your training provider when working towards your qualifications?
5/5
I have been really well supported throughout my course so far.
How well do you feel that your qualification (through your training provider) helps you to perform better in your role?
5/5
It helps me perform better in my because I have gained more knowledge and experience on during work placements. Academically although I don't find this area easy my critical thinking has improved, patient evaluation and ability to step out of my comfort zone has enhanced my practice and confidence in my work.
Are there extra-curricular activities to get involved in at your work? (For example, any social activities, sports teams, or even professional networking events.)
5/5
There are regular catch ups on teams for people to access, I don't tend to do this but that is simply through my own choice. There are also some fitness classes and health support available for staff which is really useful.

Recommendations & Advice

Would you recommend Wye Valley NHS Trust to a friend?
Yes
Why?
My experience has been very positive. It is very much a team effort and with everyone communicating and working together the way we have been is the reason it has been positive for me.
What tips or advice would you give to others applying to Wye Valley NHS Trust?
There are amazing opportunities within the trust if you want to progress. I would say the support is there, as long as you are prepared for the hard work and work with the people supporting you and find solutions rather than problems. This will make your experience far more positive and fulfilling.
