My Commercial Implementation role helps Walsall Council put its commercial strategy into practice by supporting services to generate income, reduce costs, and make more sustainable, value‑focused decisions. My focus is to strengthen financial resilience, protect frontline services, reduce reliance on funding cuts and deliver better value for residents through smarter, more sustainable approaches.

Through my role as Commercial Implementation Manager, I have strengthened established leadership and stakeholder engagement skills and developed new capabilities in commercial governance, business case assurance, and system wide commercial implementation within a politically governed local authority.

How well organised/structured is your programme?

My programme is well organised and strategically structured, with clear themes, governance, delivery plans and performance intent. It operates as a transformation programme rather than a collection of disconnected projects. While cultural initiatives and resourcing are still maturing, the underlying structure is robust, adaptive, and increasingly embedded across the organisation.
How much support do you receive from your employer?

Walsall Council provides strong strategic and leadership support, clear governance, and visible sponsorship for my programme. Operational capacity is more limited, but challenges are acknowledged and supported through prioritisation, escalation and collaboration.
How much support do you receive from your training provider when working towards your qualifications?

My training provider offers robust academic, structural and apprenticeship support, with clear learning plans and guidance that enable me to successfully progress through my MBA alongside my role.

Absolutley! There are various programmes available to join, ranging from Equality diversity inclusion (EDI), Litter picking, mentorships and professional network initiatives in the council.
