Overview of Role

Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:

5/5
As apprentice I would shadow a level 2 operator who would show me their day to day tasks in order to keep the plant running efficiently and safely. This would include completing plant checks, filing work orders, communicating issues found with the Level 1 operator and reacting to paper machine breaks. I would work through my competency matrix, signing off specific tasks related to role and once deemed competent would complete these tasks under supervision from a competent operator.

To what extent do you enjoy your programme?

5/5
I really enjoyed my apprenticeship as there was a great balance between theory and practical training. I was fully supported by operators, engineers and upper management.

Skills Development

Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?

5/5
I have learned many new hand skills and gained a great understanding of paper making and the complex process that Saica operates. My IT, analytical and critical thinking skills have improved due to constant requirement of monitoring the paper making process on the DCS and out in the field.

Structure and Support

How well organised/structured is your programme?

5/5
The programme was very well structured as we had to undertake block release to onsite college training in Grimsby as well as online lessons. Saica were very accommodating to this, as college work took precedence over shift work when required.

How much support do you receive from your employer?

5/5
I was very supported during my apprenticeship. My line manager and upper management would provide any support required without hesitation. Specifically a time when I had received parking fines during a college trip through a mixup at the hotel, Saica offered to clear this as the parking company increased threats of bailiffs coming to my address.

How much support do you receive from your training provider when working towards your qualifications?

5/5
Saica are very passionate about their employers wanting to do better and increasing their skill set. They would allow me to take time on shift to work towards my qualifications and provide me with the correct IT needed to fulfill this.

How well do you feel that your qualification (through your training provider) helps you to perform better in your role?

5/5
I have learned much needed theory and practical relating to my role. Regarding papermaking, process engineering theories and mathematical skills. The qualification will also allow me to apply for further opportunities within Saica, progressing my career.

Are there extra-curricular activities to get involved in at your work? (For example, any social activities, sports teams, or even professional networking events.)

5/5
Saica offers various extra curricular activities such as 5 a side football some evenings, attending open days to speak to school and college leavers and various other seasonal events throughout the year.
