Overview of Role
Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:
My role involves supporting clients in their own homes with day-to-day personal care and wellbeing. This includes assisting with personal hygiene, preparing meals, medication prompts, helping with mobility, and providing companionship. No two days are exactly the same, as each client has different needs and routines.
A typical day involves travelling between service users, carrying out care visits according to individual care plans, and making sure each person is treated with dignity, respect, and kindness. Building trust and developing relationships with clients is a big part of the job, and it makes the work very fulfilling.
I also ensure accurate record keeping after each visit and communicate any changes or concerns to the office team so that clients receive consistent and safe care.
Overall, working in home care has taught me patience, compassion, and responsibility. It is a role that requires dedication, but it is very rewarding knowing that I am making a positive difference in people’s daily lives.
To what extent do you enjoy your programme?
One of the things I enjoy most is learning how to provide better and more person-centred care. The training helps me understand the importance of dignity, respect, safeguarding, and communication when supporting clients in their own homes.
I also enjoy being able to apply what I learn directly in my daily work. This makes the learning more meaningful and helps me to become more confident and effective in my role.
Although balancing work and studying can sometimes be challenging, I manage this by staying organised and completing my coursework step by step. The support from my supervisor and training provider also helps me stay on track.
Overall, I feel motivated to continue with the programme because it is improving my skills and helping me develop in my career in health and social care.
Skills Development
Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
One of the main new skills I have developed is a better understanding of person-centred care. I now have a clearer awareness of how important it is to tailor care to each individual’s needs, preferences, and routines, rather than using a general approach. This has helped me provide more respectful and effective support to clients in their own homes.
I have also improved my communication skills, especially when working with service users who may have different levels of understanding or communication needs. I have learned how to speak more clearly, listen actively, and use patience to ensure clients feel comfortable and understood.
In addition, I have developed my knowledge of safeguarding and health and safety procedures. I am now more confident in recognising potential risks and knowing the correct steps to take if I have any concerns about a client’s wellbeing.
My existing skills in time management and organisation have also improved, as I now balance my daily care visits with completing my apprenticeship work and record keeping more effectively.
Overall, I feel that the apprenticeship has helped me grow both professionally and personally, and I am becoming more confident in my role as a home care worker.
Structure and Support
How well organised/structured is your programme?
I receive regular support from my assessor and workplace supervisor, which helps me stay on track with my learning and evidence collection. My assessor explains tasks clearly and gives me feedback, which helps me improve and progress in my units.
The programme is structured in a way that allows me to link my learning to my daily work as a home care worker. This makes it easier for me to complete my portfolio because I can gather evidence from real situations in my job.
I also have set deadlines and targets, which help me manage my time effectively and stay organised with both my work duties and apprenticeship work.
Although there can sometimes be busy periods at work that make it harder to complete coursework immediately, I am able to manage this with planning and support from my assessor.
Overall, I feel the programme is well structured and helps me develop my skills in a clear and supportive way.
