As an Account Manager, I am responsible for the overall management and growth of the account, ensuring strong commercial performance and a collaborative partnership with the retailer. A key part of my role is building and maintaining effective relationships with the buyers, understanding their priorities, and aligning our product offering to meet both business goals and customer needs.
I lead the end-to-end process of launching products within the customer, from initial listing and negotiation through to successful in-store execution. This involves coordinating closely with internal teams, including supply chain and finance, to ensure products are delivered on time, priced correctly, and supported by accurate forecasting and financial planning.
Internally, I act as the central point of contact to ensure seamless communication and alignment across teams, helping to facilitate smooth and efficient sales into stores. Externally, I focus on delivering value to the retailer while continuously improving the overall shopping experience for the consumer by ensuring product availability, quality, and ease of purchase.
Ultimately, my role combines strategic account management, cross-functional collaboration, and customer-focused execution to drive sustainable growth and enhance the consumer experience.

I really enjoy the programme, as it gives me valuable hands-on experience alongside my role at Unilever. The opportunity to apply what I’m learning in a real business environment makes the programme both engaging and rewarding. My job keeps me motivated to continue studying, as I can clearly see the relevance of my learning and how it supports my professional development and day-to-day responsibilities. Overall, the combination of practical experience and academic learning makes the programme highly enjoyable and worthwhile.

Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?

Yes, I have both learnt new skills and developed existing ones throughout the programme. In particular, developing my overall management skills has been extremely valuable, especially in relation to people and project management. I’ve gained confidence in coordinating different stakeholders, managing timelines, and ensuring projects run smoothly.
Communication has also been a key area of growth. It’s such an essential skill in my role, and I’ve learnt quickly how important it is to communicate clearly and effectively with both internal teams and external partners. Overall, the programme has significantly strengthened my ability to manage responsibilities and collaborate successfully.

Structure and Support

How well organised/structured is your programme?

It is well organised for the majority of the time, and we are provided with strong support and guidance throughout the programme. However, the occasional module has been more difficult to manage due to last-minute lecturer changes, which can impact consistency and planning.

How much support do you receive from your employer?

I receive a good level of support overall, although it can depend on the line manager you have. I’ve been fortunate to work with supportive managers, which has made a positive difference. In addition, there are wider support structures in place, such as career sponsors, who you can stay closely connected with for guidance and development.

How much support do you receive from your training provider when working towards your qualifications?

Support is available when requested, and guidance is provided as needed to help progress towards my qualifications.

How well do you feel that your qualification (through your training provider) helps you to perform better in your role?

The qualification has been very helpful in supporting my performance in the role. It has allowed me to both learn new skills and further develop existing ones, particularly in areas such as overall management, project coordination, and communication. Being able to apply this knowledge in a real work setting has made the learning much more relevant and impactful. It has strengthened my confidence in managing responsibilities and working with different stakeholders, ultimately helping me perform more effectively in my role.

The company has really supported my personal and professional growth, helping me develop my skills and adapt the way I work, while also giving me the opportunity to work towards a degree. It’s a dynamic, fast-paced environment that keeps things interesting, and overall it’s a great place to learn, grow, and enjoy your work.

What tips or advice would you give to others applying to Unilever?

I would advise being confident in yourself and your abilities throughout the application process. Make sure you do thorough research on Unilever, so you understand the company, its values, and how you align with them. It’s also important to have a clear idea of where you see yourself in the next 5 years and be able to communicate that. Finally, maintain strong eye contact and good communication, as it helps to show confidence and leaves a positive impression.
