Overview of Role

Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis.

I am lab based and am apart of a project where I am trying to make new products for Unilever. I present my findings to my stakeholders and managers. I also work closely with other members of my team to ensure the project is efficient and successful.

Were you given much responsibility during your placement / internship?

Yes, I am seen as an ordinary employee, which is one of the many things I’ve throughly enjoyed about the placement. I have my own side of my project which I do the work for and report to my supervisor.

Have you learnt any new skills, or developed your existing skills?

I have learnt effective communication from working with other colleagues effectively, as well as when presenting scientific firings to stakeholders or managers.
I have also learnt to code, which I had only done briefly before, and now I am quite confident.

How much support and guidance did you receive during your placement / internship?

My team have been extremely supportive throughout my placement such as giving me 1 day a week to do my university work.
They were also very helpful when I started and trained me up to be confident on the required equipment or methods.

Company Culture

What was the company culture and general atmosphere like?

It’s a very lovely company to work for. Everyone is so friendly and welcoming. As well as being willing to help with any questions or guidance if needed. There’s also someone who you can speak to about anything whether it’s work related or not.

Overall Experience

To what extent did you enjoy your placement / internship?

I’ve really enjoyed my placement, I’ve learnt so much working in industry and being able to able my learnings from university to the working world. I’ve also made so many friendships with other placement students, which I know will last afterwards.

Would you recommend Unilever to a friend?

Yes

What advice would you give to others applying to Unilever

Definitely research into what products/ brands the company sells as there’s so many that you wouldn’t even know Unilever owned. Also, I would definitely know the Unilever behaviours as they are a huge part of the company’s ethos.
