Analytical Chemistry Industrial Placement Review

Taking ownership of a research project, including literature review, designing, and carrying out experiments. Presenting results to my team and university supervisor. Attending regular meetings and helping on other projects when requested.

Responsibility for a project was given to me alongside lots of guidance and support, and daily check ins with my supervisor.

I have learnt so much about how a business like Unilever functions and all the different jobs which exist. I have gained practical lab experience in analytical techniques such as nephelometry and LC-MS. I have also improved on various other workplace skills such as presenting, report writing, and networking.

Lots of support was given to me from many members of the team. Weekly project alignment meetings were held with another placement student whom I was working alongside and I was able to ask as many questions as I needed.

Incredibly kind, welcoming, and caring company culture where everyone is valued. Plenty of lunchtime clubs and a range of other social events so I found it easy to settle in, meet people who I didn't work with directly, and make friends. Additionally there are communities such as the LGBT+ and neurodiversity network which organise talks and events. There are also paid volunteering days and outreach opportunities to help with if you would like.

This year has been absolutely incredible. I've learned so much and grown even more. This placement has provided so much clarity to me and thoroughly solidified my desired career trajectory. I really feel that the work I am doing is impactful and I've enjoyed every aspect of the process.
