Overview of Role

Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:

4/5
I work as a Site Engineer, supporting the planning and delivery of construction works on site. On a day‑to‑day basis, this involves setting out using surveying equipment, checking levels and dimensions, and ensuring works are constructed in line with drawings, specifications, and quality standards. I regularly liaise with subcontractors, supervisors, and managers to coordinate activities, resolve technical queries, and maintain progress. My role also includes monitoring health and safety compliance, completing site records, assisting with inspections, and supporting problem‑solving where design or site constraints arise. Overall, the role provides strong exposure to both the technical and practical aspects of civil engineering delivery.

To what extent do you enjoy your programme?

4/5
I enjoy the programme to a good extent as it offers valuable hands‑on experience alongside my academic studies. The exposure to live projects has significantly improved my technical understanding, confidence on site and ability to apply theory in a real‑world context. I particularly value the responsibility given to me and the opportunity to learn from experienced colleagues. While balancing work and study can be demanding at times, the programme is well structured and provides a strong foundation for my future career in civil engineering.

Skills Development

Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?

4/5
Through the programme, I have developed a range of both technical and professional skills. I have strengthened my setting‑out and surveying skills, improved my ability to interpret drawings and specifications, and gained greater confidence in identifying and resolving technical issues on site. I have also developed a better understanding of construction sequencing, quality control, and health and safety procedures. In addition, my communication and teamwork skills have improved significantly through regular interaction with subcontractors, supervisors, and management, as well as contributing to site coordination and reporting. Overall, the programme has helped me build confidence, practical competence, and a more professional approach to working on live construction projects.

Structure and Support

How well organised/structured is your programme?

4/5
The programme is generally well organised and provides a clear framework for combining academic study with practical site experience. There are defined objectives and expectations, and the structure allows me to progressively take on more responsibility as my skills develop. The balance between learning and practical application works well overall, although there are times when workload management can be challenging due to project demands. Despite this, the programme offers good opportunities for development and maintains a clear direction throughout.

How much support do you receive from your employer?

4/5
I receive a good level of support from my employer. Line managers and senior engineers are approachable and provide guidance when technical or site‑related issues arise. I am encouraged to ask questions, develop my skills, and take ownership of tasks appropriate to my level of experience. There is also flexibility shown around my academic commitments when required. Overall, the support helps create a positive learning environment while maintaining project delivery expectations.

How much support do you receive from your training provider when working towards your qualifications?

4/5
The training provider offers structured academic support and clear guidance on coursework, assessments, and qualification requirements. Tutors are accessible and provide feedback that helps me improve my understanding of key engineering concepts. The course content aligns well with my role on site, supporting the application of theory into practice. While the workload can be demanding at times, the support available allows me to stay on track with my qualifications.

How well do you feel that your qualification (through your training provider) helps you to perform better in your role?

4/5
My qualification supports my performance in my role well by strengthening my technical understanding and providing the theoretical background behind the work carried out on site. Topics such as structural behaviour, construction methods, and project planning have helped me better understand drawings, specifications, and design intent. This allows me to make more informed decisions, identify potential issues earlier, and communicate more effectively with senior engineers and subcontractors. While some learning is more theoretical, much of it links directly to site activities and helps improve my confidence and competence in carrying out my day‑to‑day responsibilities.

Are there extra-curricular activities to get involved in at your work? (For example, any social activities, sports teams, or even professional networking events.)

4/5
There are opportunities to get involved in extra‑curricular and informal activities through work, including team social events and occasions to engage with colleagues outside of the immediate site environment. There are also opportunities for professional networking through meetings, project team interactions, and industry‑related events, which support both professional development and relationship building. While participation can depend on workload and project demands, these activities help promote teamwork, morale, and a positive working culture.
