Overview of Role

Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:

5/5
As a second-year degree apprentice solicitor working within the conveyancing department, I currently support the team in a secretarial capacity while continuing to develop my legal knowledge and practical skills. Alongside my role, I attend university one day per week to work towards obtaining my law degree, enabling me to apply academic learning directly to my practical work.
My role involves providing comprehensive administrative and organisational support to fee earners, ensuring that property transactions progress efficiently and in line with regulatory requirements. On a day-to-day basis, I am responsible for tasks such as preparing and formatting legal documents and correspondence, opening and closing client files, conducting ID checks and compliance procedures, and managing case management systems. I regularly liaise with clients, estate agents, mortgage lenders, and other solicitors to obtain updates, provide information, and help maintain clear communication throughout transactions. I also assist with drafting standard documents, handling post-completion tasks, and ensuring that key deadlines are met.
In addition to my administrative duties, I am continually building my understanding of the conveyancing process, including sales, purchases, remortgages, and transfers of equity. This role allows me to develop key skills such as attention to detail, time management, client care, and professional communication, all of which are essential for my progression toward qualification as a solicitor.

To what extent do you enjoy your programme?

5/5
I have thoroughly enjoyed my degree apprenticeship programme so far, as it provides a valuable balance between academic study and practical experience. I particularly appreciate the opportunity to learn legal principles at university and then apply that knowledge directly within a professional setting, which has significantly enhanced my understanding of the law. The programme has also allowed me to develop confidence in client interaction, which I find especially rewarding. Engaging with clients and supporting them throughout the conveyancing process has strengthened my communication skills and reinforced my interest in progressing within the legal profession.

Skills Development

Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?

5/5
Throughout my apprenticeship, I have developed a wide range of new skills and strengthened existing ones. Professionally, I have improved my communication skills, both written and verbal, particularly through regular interaction with clients, estate agents, and other legal professionals. I have also developed strong organisational and time management skills, enabling me to prioritise tasks effectively and meet important deadlines in a fast-paced environment. My attention to detail has significantly improved, especially when preparing legal documents and carrying out compliance checks.
In addition, I have gained practical experience in using case management systems and a better understanding of the conveyancing process, which has enhanced my technical knowledge. I have also become more confident in working independently, while recognising when to seek guidance where necessary. Overall, the apprenticeship has supported my professional growth and helped me build the key skills required for a future career as a solicitor.

Structure and Support

How well organised/structured is your programme?

5/5
My apprenticeship has been well structured both at university and within the workplace, providing clarity and consistency throughout the programme. I have a good understanding of key milestones, including when my exams take place, the duration of the course, and the timeline for achieving my law degree and qualifying as a solicitor. At work, the structure is also clear, with defined seat rotations that allow me to gain experience across different areas of practice over set periods of time. This organised approach has helped me plan ahead, manage my workload effectively, and stay focused on both my academic and professional development. Overall, the structure of the apprenticeship has supported my progression and given me confidence in the pathway toward qualification.

How much support do you receive from your employer?

5/5
I receive a high level of support from my employer, which has been instrumental in my development throughout the apprenticeship. I am supported by other secretaries and fee earners within the department, who are always willing to offer guidance and answer any questions I may have. I also have regular meetings with my mentor, which provide a valuable opportunity to review my progress, discuss any challenges, and set goals for continued development. In addition, I feel confident that I can approach any member of staff for support when needed. This supportive working environment has enabled me to build my confidence and develop both professionally and personally.

How much support do you receive from your training provider when working towards your qualifications?

5/5
I receive a strong level of support from my university, which has been very beneficial to my progress on the programme. The lecturers are approachable and supportive, and they provide clear guidance throughout each module. I also have a personal apprentice mentor who conducts regular progress reviews involving myself and my employer, ensuring that all aspects of my development are aligned and any concerns are addressed. In addition, we have one-to-one sessions with lecturers, and they provide extra support sessions ahead of exams, which I have found particularly helpful for consolidating my understanding. Overall, the level of support from the university has been excellent and has contributed positively to both my academic performance and confidence.

How well do you feel that your qualification (through your training provider) helps you to perform better in your role?

5/5
I feel that my qualification through my training provider has supported me well in performing better in my role. The knowledge I gain at university provides a solid foundation in legal principles, which I am able to apply in a practical context within the conveyancing department. This has helped me to better understand the reasoning behind the tasks I carry out on a day-to-day basis, rather than simply completing them administratively. As a result, I am more confident in my work and able to contribute more effectively to the team. In addition, the other modules I study at university will support me during future seat rotations, as they provide insight into a range of legal practice areas beyond conveyancing. The structure of my degree has also been tailored to support preparation for the SQE exams, ensuring that I am developing the knowledge and skills required for qualification as a solicitor. Overall, the combination of academic learning and practical experience has enhanced both my competence and overall performance in my role.

Are there extra-curricular activities to get involved in at your work? (For example, any social activities, sports teams, or even professional networking events.)

5/5
There are a range of extra-curricular activities available at work, which contribute positively to the overall working environment. I have attended a number of networking events and charity functions, including charity balls, which have provided valuable opportunities to build professional relationships and develop my confidence. I have also taken part in a half marathon in support of the firm’s chosen charity, which was a rewarding experience both personally and as part of the wider team. There are also future networking events already planned, which I am looking forward to attending.
In addition, the firm organises social events such as a Christmas and summer social, which provide a great opportunity to connect with colleagues across different departments in a more informal setting. Overall, these activities enhance my experience within the firm and allow me to develop both professionally and socially.
