Overview of Role

Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:

4/5
Project management within the utilities sector is both demanding and highly rewarding. On a day-to-day basis, my role involves coordinating multiple stakeholders, managing programme timelines, and ensuring works are delivered safely, compliantly, and in line with project requirements. This includes overseeing utility installations, liaising with contractors, DNOs, and clients, resolving on-site and commercial issues, and maintaining clear communication across all parties.
The role can be challenging, as projects often involve factors outside of direct control, requiring quick thinking and problem-solving to mitigate risks and keep delivery on track. However, this is balanced by the satisfaction of successfully delivering projects from inception through to completion. A key part of the role is also building strong working relationships with colleagues, clients, and specialists across the industry, which becomes invaluable in overcoming challenges and improving efficiency over time.

To what extent do you enjoy your programme?

4/5
I have generally enjoyed the programme and the opportunities it has provided for both personal and professional development. As with any programme, there have been moments that have pushed me outside of my comfort zone, particularly when approaching deadlines or preparing for exams. These periods can be challenging, but they have also helped to build resilience, discipline, and time management skills.
I am grateful for the opportunity and remain focused on the long-term outcome. I recognise that the challenges are part of the development process, and successfully completing the programme will ultimately make me a more capable and well-rounded project manager.

Skills Development

Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?

5/5
I am continuously developing both new and existing skills within my role. Working in the utilities sector requires ongoing learning, particularly in relation to industry regulations, standards, and compliance requirements, which I build on daily through practical experience.
Alongside this, I have significantly developed my communication skills by regularly liaising with clients, contractors, and internal teams to ensure clear and effective information flow. My financial awareness has also improved, as I’ve gained a better understanding of project costs, budgets, and the commercial impact of decisions.
In addition, I have strengthened my problem-solving abilities by managing challenges as they arise and working proactively to keep projects on track. This has also enhanced my attention to detail, enabling me to identify potential risks or issues early and take preventative action where possible.

Structure and Support

How well organised/structured is your programme?

4/5
The programme is well structured, with clear phases that support progressive learning and development. The initial 7–8 months focus on workshop-based learning, which provides a strong foundation in preparation for the exam. This is followed by approximately 5–6 months dedicated to portfolio development, allowing apprentices to apply their knowledge in a practical context. The final stage consists of around 3 months focused on completing a project report.
Whilst the programme has a defined structure, there is also a degree of flexibility, enabling apprentices to manage their workload and progress at a pace that suits their individual circumstances.

How much support do you receive from your employer?

5/5
My employer has been supportive throughout my apprenticeship, recognising the balance required between my day-to-day responsibilities and my academic commitments. They have acknowledged that at certain stages I need dedicated time to focus on apprenticeship work and have provided flexibility within my role to accommodate this.
In addition, my employer enrols me on relevant training courses and workshops, which not only support my development in the role but also contribute towards my apprenticeship requirements.
This overall support has enabled me to manage both my workload and studies effectively, ensuring I can meet programme requirements without compromising project delivery. It also reflects a clear commitment to my professional development, which has been instrumental in helping me progress through the apprenticeship.

How much support do you receive from your training provider when working towards your qualifications?

5/5
My training provider has provided support whenever its been needed, I have open dialogue with my tutor who is always willing to have a chat in time of difficulty.

How well do you feel that your qualification (through your training provider) helps you to perform better in your role?

4/5
My qualification provides a strong foundation in the core principles of project management and offers a broad understanding of the role and its responsibilities. Whilst not every aspect directly aligns with my day-to-day role at Last Mile, the majority of the skills and knowledge gained are transferable and relevant.
In particular, areas such as planning, risk management, communication, and stakeholder engagement have had a positive impact on my daily performance. I am able to apply these principles in a practical setting, which has improved both my efficiency and confidence when managing projects.
Overall, the qualification complements my on-the-job experience well, reinforcing best practice and supporting my development as a more capable and well-rounded project manager.

Are there extra-curricular activities to get involved in at your work? (For example, any social activities, sports teams, or even professional networking events.)
