Overview of Role

Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:
4/5
Carrying out planning, delivery and completion of jobs on the overhead network, whether that be new installations, or restorations, or fault repairs.
To what extent do you enjoy your programme?
4/5
I really enjoy my job, it’s not perfect but no job is. I get to work with people I get along with on a day to day basis and feel respected and part of a team. I enjoy the work and I enjoy working out in the environments in and around the beautiful Cotswolds.

Skills Development

Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
5/5
I have learnt so much since I joined the apprenticeship. I feel so much more confident in myself whether that be in communicating with customers and colleagues, in my knowledge of electrical engineering or in my practical skills that I have learnt and developed throughout the past two and a half years. I feel like I have grown as a person in many ways.

Structure and Support

How well organised/structured is your programme?
4/5
Structure was good throughout my apprenticeship overall however there was times where I thought that certain technological reviews and computer based assessments etc. were difficult to use and overkill.
How much support do you receive from your employer?
3/5
Support was theoretically good. I had lots of talks about my dyslexia and sit down chats on zoom with a specialist about what I need to help me throughout my apprenticeship technology wise and also in person. However a lot of this discussion and solutions that we came up with did never get implemented into my day to day work. Despite trying to chase up on it I still saw none of the software or other ideas that I was told would be offered to me. However I did receive bare minimum help like extra time in exams and assessments and blue paper if needed.
How much support do you receive from your training provider when working towards your qualifications?
3/5
Support for finishing the apprenticeship is really good most of the time. Sometimes it is hard to remind the local team you work with of the fact you are an apprentice and can easily get seen as just another person to go on any job without thought about the specific tasks you need. For a long time I was floating around without a team that I would be with consistently. This did not help me finish my apprenticeship as I just got used as a spare hand on jobs that needed an extra person. Eventually this got fixed after me complaining a few times and towards the end of my apprenticeship I have finally been back in a team consistently which is much better
How well do you feel that your qualification (through your training provider) helps you to perform better in your role?
4/5
The electrical engineering level 2 college qualification definitely helped a lot in understanding the basic principles of electricity and how to calculate certain degrees etc. however the college that they send you to is not the best and the teacher has been complained about by pretty much every person who has had him as he does not have a clue, and yet they still use him as the teacher.
Are there extra-curricular activities to get involved in at your work? (For example, any social activities, sports teams, or even professional networking events.)
5/5
Yes the volunteering opportunities are great, there are a lot on offer and I have done a fair few of them and enjoyed all of them thoroughly.

Recommendations & Advice

Would you recommend National Grid to a friend?
Yes
Why?
It is a great stable job, very fun most of the time and enjoyable. Working with great groups of people in a big team. Lots of opportunities to make more money through overtime and lots of ways to move up through the company with different job role offers.
What tips or advice would you give to others applying to National Grid?
Keep on top of TAR tasks and diaries as once you fall behind it is hard to catch back up, and believe in yourself. Be attentive and make a good name for yourself in the first year as making a bad name for yourself is very hard to change. Be polite and kind to everyone as there will be a time where you need there help with something throughout your apprenticeship.
