Overview of Role

Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:

5/5
As an Assistant Management Accountant at Great Western Hospitals, I play a key role in supporting the financial management of the Trust’s services. My daily responsibilities include preparing and reviewing financial reports, monitoring expenditure, and investigating variances to help budget holders make informed decisions. I process journals, maintain financial records, and assist with monthly and quarterly reporting cycles. I work closely with operational teams to provide financial guidance, answer queries, and ensure compliance with internal procedures. Alongside this, I contribute to continuous improvement initiatives within the finance department.

To what extent do you enjoy your programme?

5/5
I am enjoying the programme to a great extent. The content is relevant to my role, and I appreciate how it pushes me to think more strategically. The mix of learning, reflection, and real‑world application has helped me grow both professionally and personally. Although balancing study with work can be challenging, I find the programme rewarding and feel that it’s adding real value to my development.

Skills Development

Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?

5/5
I have learnt new skills and strengthened the ones I already had. The programme has expanded my knowledge of management accounting techniques and given me a stronger foundation in strategic thinking. I have also developed my analytical skills, improved my ability to work with complex data, and become more confident presenting financial information. On a personal level, I have grown in resilience, emotional intelligence, self‑management, and the ability to balance high workloads effectively

Structure and Support

How well organised/structured is your programme?

5/5
The programme is structured effectively, with a clear timetable and well‑defined milestones. Each unit builds on the last, which makes it easier to connect the academic learning to my role. The regular check‑ins, workshops, and support sessions help keep everything organised, and I always know what is expected of me and when. This structure has made it easier to manage the apprenticeship alongside my job.

How much support do you receive from your employer?

5/5
My employer provides strong support throughout the programme. I have regular check‑ins with my manager, who helps me plan my workload around key apprenticeship deadlines. I am also given opportunities to take on tasks that align with my learning, which has helped me build confidence and experience. The team is always willing to answer questions and offer guidance when needed.

How much support do you receive from your training provider when working towards your qualifications?

5/5
My training provider offers consistent support throughout the programme. The workshops, online resources, and one‑to‑one sessions are well organised, and I always know where to go if I need help. The feedback on assignments is detailed and constructive, which has helped me understand how to improve and apply the learning in my role.

How well do you feel that your qualification (through your training provider) helps you to perform better in your role?

5/5
My qualification has helped me perform better in my role by giving me a stronger understanding of the principles behind the work I do day to day. The programme has improved my ability to analyse financial information, interpret data, and think more strategically. I am now more confident supporting budget holders and contributing to month‑end processes because I understand the wider context behind the numbers.

Are there extra-curricular activities to get involved in at your work? (For example, any social activities, sports teams, or even professional networking events.)

5/5
There are plenty of opportunities to get involved in activities outside my core role. I have attended conferences, which have been valuable for meeting other finance professionals and gaining a broader understanding of NHS finance. I have also completed mental‑health and wellbeing courses, which have supported both my personal development and resilience at work. In addition, I am now involved with the EDI society, which allows me to contribute to inclusion initiatives across the Trust.
