Main role (what you actually do)
You’re working with the “fixed plant” — that means large, stationary machines in the quarry (not vehicles). These include:
Crushers (break rock into smaller sizes)
Conveyors (move materials around)
Screens (sort materials by size)
Hoppers and processing equipment
As an apprentice, you:
Help operate plant machinery safely
Monitor production (making sure materials are processed correctly)
Assist with maintenance and basic repairs
Keep the plant clean and running efficiently
This is hands-on, practical work, mostly outdoors.

Typical day-to-day duties include:
Carrying out safety checks before starting machinery
Watching control panels and adjusting settings
Clearing blockages or faults in equipment
Helping load materials and keep production flowing
Reporting issues to supervisors or engineers
You’ll also learn to use heavy machinery like loading shovels over time.

Quarry work is high-risk, so a big part of the job is:
Following strict health & safety rules

During my time as a fixed plant quarry operative apprentice, I have learnt how to operate and monitor a range of fixed plant machinery, including crushers, conveyors, and screening equipment. I have developed an understanding of how raw materials are processed and how to maintain a steady and efficient production flow.
I have also learnt the importance of carrying out pre-start checks and identifying potential faults early. I can now assist with basic maintenance tasks, such as clearing blockages and helping to keep equipment in good working condition.
Health and safety has been a key part of my learning. I understand how to follow strict safety procedures, use the correct personal protective equipment, and work safely around heavy machinery in a high-risk environment.
In addition, I have improved my teamwork and communication skills by working closely with experienced operatives and supervisors. I have learnt how to take instructions, report issues clearly, and contribute to keeping the site running smoothly.
Overall, I have gained practical, hands-on experience and a strong understanding of quarry operations, which is helping me build a solid foundation for my future career.
