Overview of Role

Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:

4/5
I support the day-to-day running of a live construction project within a hospital environment. I help the Project Manager by coordinating information, supporting planning activities, and working with different teams to make sure work is organised and carried out smoothly. I regularly liaise with contractors and NHS Trust staff to help ensure work is planned in advance, carried out safely, and with minimal disruption to hospital services. A key part of my role is helping make sure things are in place before work starts, such as approvals, access arrangements, and basic safety documentation.
On a day-to-day basis, I focus heavily on communication and organisation. I draft and send clear emails and notices, keep track of actions and documents, and make sure the right people are kept informed at the right time. I attend site visits and meetings to understand what is happening on site and support decision-making. Through this, I am building my confidence, professional skills, and understanding of how construction projects operate in a busy, live hospital setting, while gradually taking on more responsibility as I develop toward the next level of my role.

To what extent do you enjoy your programme?

4/5
Very much

Skills Development

Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?

4/5
I have strengthened my communication and organisational skills by regularly drafting clear emails and notices, coordinating with different stakeholders, and keeping project information up to date. I have become more confident engaging with contractors, Trust staff, and internal team members, and I am better at prioritising tasks, tracking actions, and maintaining accurate records to support smooth project delivery.
I have also developed new skills in understanding how construction works are planned and delivered within a live hospital environment. Through site visits, meetings, and hands-on involvement, I have improved my awareness of safety considerations, planning ahead to reduce disruption, and the importance of clear approvals and coordination. Overall, these experiences have helped me grow in confidence, professionalism, and responsibility, and have prepared me to take on more ownership as I progress in my role.

Structure and Support

How well organised/structured is your programme?

4/5
My programme is well organised and structured, with a clear balance between day-to-day project work, learning on the job, and wider professional development. I have defined responsibilities within the project team, which helps me plan my workload, prioritise tasks, and understand what is expected of me on a daily basis. Regular engagement with my manager and team provides structure, direction, and clarity, while ongoing tasks and deadlines help me build consistency and routine in my role.
Alongside this, my development is supported through on-the-job learning, site exposure, and structured reflection, which allows me to link practical experience with skill development. The combination of hands-on project involvement, feedback, and learning outcomes makes the programme effective and manageable, while also giving me opportunities to gradually take on more responsibility as my confidence and capability grow.

How much support do you receive from your employer?

5/5
Plenty of support

How much support do you receive from your training provider when working towards your qualifications?

4/5
Good amount of support

How well do you feel that your qualification (through your training provider) helps you to perform better in your role?

4/5
I feel that my qualification through my training provider supports my role well and adds clear value to how I perform day to day. The learning I complete alongside my job helps me understand the wider context of construction projects, such as how projects are planned, managed, and controlled, which makes the tasks I carry out at work more meaningful. This background knowledge helps me understand why certain processes are important, rather than just following instructions, and allows me to approach tasks with more confidence and awareness.
The qualification also encourages me to reflect on my work, communicate more professionally, and organise my tasks more effectively, which directly improves how I contribute to the project team. Being able to link what I am learning to real examples from my project helps reinforce my understanding and development. Overall, the qualification complements my on-the-job experience well by giving structure to my learning and helping me build the skills and confidence needed to perform better in my role and prepare for progression.

Are there extra-curricular activities to get involved in at your work? (For example, any social activities, sports teams, or even professional networking events.)

4/5
Yes, networking events, emerging talent events, padel sessions to improve team building etc

Recommendations & Advice

Would you recommend Mace Consult to a friend?

Yes

Why?

I would recommend Mace Consult to a friend because it provides a supportive, professional, and well-structured environment where you are trusted with real responsibility from an early stage. I have been given the opportunity to work on a live and complex healthcare project, which has helped me gain practical experience, build confidence, and understand how projects are delivered in the real world. The team is approachable and supportive, and there is a strong culture of collaboration, learning, and asking questions, which makes it a good environment to develop both personally and professionally.
Mace also places a clear emphasis on development and progression, particularly for early career professionals and apprentices. There is encouragement to get involved, attend site visits, learn from different disciplines, and reflect on experiences to continuously improve. I feel supported in developing my skills and working towards the next stage of my career, which makes Mace Consult a great place for someone who wants to learn, grow, and build a long-term career in the construction and consultancy industry.

What tips or advice would you give to others applying to Mace Consult?

I would advise anyone applying to Mace Consult to show a genuine interest in the industry and the work Mace does, rather than focusing only on qualifications. Be clear about why you want to work in consultancy, what you hope to learn, and how you are willing to get involved. Mace values people who are curious, proactive, and open to learning, so highlighting examples where you have taken initiative, worked in a team, or adapted to new situations is really important.
I’d also recommend being honest, well‑prepared, and willing to ask questions. Research Mace’s values, projects, and culture beforehand, and think about how your own attitude and skills align with them. Showing good communication skills, professionalism, and a positive mindset goes a long way. Finally, be ready to take responsibility and learn on the job—Mace gives early career professionals real exposure and trust, so having the right attitude and willingness to grow is key.
