My job role as a highway technician involves the inspection and maintenance of Wiltshire Councils highway network ensuring it is safe for its users and also to provide evidence to defend the council against possible insurance claims
To what extent do you enjoy your programme?

The delivery of my programme from Wiltshire Council was excellent and my development was continuously prioritised, always searching for ways to upskill me or show me new areas to broaden my knowledge and skills
Skills Development
Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?

I have developed on my personal and intercommunication skills through my dealings with the general public and working in a very front facing sector. I have also developed my technical knowledge of highway infrastructure and engineering, learning about carriageway construction and maintenance.
Structure and Support
How well organised/structured is your programme?

My programmes structure from Wiltshire Council was very well thought out with a learning matrix set out from the beginning showing areas of the job role that I need to gain knowledge in, this programme allowed me to apply for and be offered a full time position as a highway technician before my apprenticeship ended showing I had developed the skills of a full time employee. My programme was only slightly let down by the college I attended to for my learning.
How much support do you receive from your employer?

My employer was extremely supportive throughout my apprenticeship allowing me to prioritise my development and learning throughout.
How much support do you receive from your training provider when working towards your qualifications?
2/5
My training provider was very poorly organised and there was a large lack of support from the college during my course. This is not a reflection of Wiltshire Council as they tried rectifying any issues presented and supported me through the adversity created by the college
How well do you feel that your qualification (through your training provider) helps you to perform better in your role?

My qualification has had an overall positive impact on my role as it has allowed me to embed some technical knowledge however my qualification is not completely relevant to all aspects of my role.
Are there extra-curricular activities to get involved in at your work? (For example, any social activities, sports teams, or even professional networking events.)

An early careers network has recently been developed which has presented many extra curricular activities and enrichment events.

Would you recommend Wiltshire council to a friend?
Yes
Why?
I have had continuous support from those around me and my work life balance has never been an issue. This is a company that prioritises development for those who seek it out making it a great employer for young workers
What tips or advice would you give to others applying to Wiltshire council?
I would advise them to seek out all possible development opportunities and take what is presented to them as it is a good opportunity to upskill yourself and simultaneously develop real life work experience
