Overview of Role

Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:
3/5
My role is an aircraft maintenance technician apprentice. This means I work alongside qualified aircraft maintenance technicians, to assist them with the modification and maintenance of aircraft.
Whilst doing this I work through my level 3 NVQ criteria, which includes assisting on a set list of jobs and answering a series of knowledged based questions. This is all done on the 2nd and 3rd year of the apprenticeship.
The first year consists of a dedicated learning year based in Cardiff, where you are provided with work-paid student accomodation to study at a nearby college, to build up fundamental hand skills and fully complete your level 2.
To what extent do you enjoy your programme?
3/5
Overall the course has its up's and down's. The first year, which is based in Cardiff, is an enjoyable experience where you learn the knowledge required.
The second and third year and where you will experience some of the down's of the programme. Unfortunately not all time is spent on aircraft doing the job you signup for, as Boeing have a strong lack of personnel which leads to you being pulled away from your job to spend weeks and possibbly months doing jobs that provide no development, for example working in the general tool stores to issue equipment and tools to all workers.

Skills Development

Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
3/5
I have learnt many news skills thanks to a few individuals in the hangar I work in. The first year left me with a few major knowledge gaps that were necessary to be filled in order to do the job safely and correctly. Thankfully where I worked I managed to gain assistance from a few technicians that felt sympathetic to my lack of training.

Structure and Support

How well organised/structured is your programme?
3/5
The first year is very well structured. You follow a set block learning pattern which is fast paced but you have great assistance from the college staff.
The second and third year are alot harder, as you are given requirements to complete but then left to fend for yourself. This can lead to situations where you are scrambling for assistance from someone.
How much support do you receive from your employer?
3/5
Great support for the first year, but this again drops of when you leave the college and are moved onto the hangar floor.
How much support do you receive from your training provider when working towards your qualifications?
5/5
The training provider for this qualification are incredible. The support you recieved is above and beyond.
How well do you feel that your qualification (through your training provider) helps you to perform better in your role?
2/5
Lacks knowledge and structure to develop competent technicians
Are there extra-curricular activities to get involved in at your work? (For example, any social activities, sports teams, or even professional networking events.)
1/5
Only opportunitites available are STEM volunteering, however these can be poorly organised and sometimes have lacked STEM advertising.
