Overview of Role

Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:

4/5
I support the design and delivery of a variety of digital and visual assets that align with SAP’s brand and communication objectives. My role involves responding to design requests, working on both individual and collaborative projects to create content such as microsites, hype videos, presentation materials, graphics, and other video assets. These are then refined based on feedback to ensure projects are delivered on time and to a high standard.

To what extent do you enjoy your programme?

4/5
For the most part I do enjoy my job here at SAP, particularly the opportunity to work alongside such supportive and talented colleagues as the team environment is always very positive, and I value being able to learn from others. I also really appreciate the opportunity to gain a degree alongside meaningful work experience as this has been incredibly valuable for my professional development. However, there are times when my day-to-day can feel slightly repetitive as my work seems to revolve around the same two formats - microsites or hype videos - and so, I would love more opportunities to explore a wider variety of creative outputs and asset types, as this would help me further develop my creative skillset and broaden my experience as a designer.

Skills Development

Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?

4/5
Throughout my role, I have continued to develop my existing skills while also gaining new ones. I have strengthened my design capabilities through regular use of Adobe Creative Cloud, improving my ability to interpret briefs, translate ideas into effective visual concepts, and refine designs based on stakeholder feedback. I have also developed my collaboration and communication skills by working closely with colleagues across teams, managing design requests through project management tools, and contributing to projects from initial concept through to final delivery. Alongside this, I have proactively started building skills in new software such as Figma, Blender, and DaVinci Resolve. I am always keen to expand my creative toolkit and explore new tools and techniques that can enhance both my skillset and the work I contribute to.

Structure and Support

How well organised/structured is your programme?

4/5
Overall, my programme feels well structured and provides a good balance between gaining practical work experience and progressing with my degree. I have regular quarterly meetings with my manager and my skills coach, who acts as a bridge between the university and the workplace. These check-ins are helpful for reviewing progress, discussing development, and ensuring that I am managing both my workload and university assignments effectively. As part of the programme, I am also allocated six hours per week to focus on university work. While project priorities at SAP sometimes mean I need to be flexible with this time, I am able to manage this by planning ahead and using my initiative to ensure my academic work is still completed alongside my professional responsibilities.

How much support do you receive from your employer?

3/5
I receive good day-to-day support from my immediate team and manager. The creative team has regular creative sync meetings with our manager where we review projects, discuss workload, and ensure everything is accounted for and on track for their respective deadlines. I also know that, while he is busy, I can approach my manager whenever I need guidance or support. However, since my mentor left last summer, I no longer have the same regular one-to-one support from someone directly involved in reviewing my university assignments or following my academic work as closely as before. While this has allowed me to take greater ownership of my role and become more independent in managing my work and balancing my university commitments, as my assignments increase in level and workload it would sometimes be helpful to have the opportunity to talk through ideas or approaches with someone familiar with the organisation, particularly for assignments that centre around SAP.

How much support do you receive from your training provider when working towards your qualifications?

5/5
I cannot fault my skills coach, for the support she provides throughout the academic year. Our quarterly meetings are always helpful for reviewing progress, discussing upcoming assignments, and ensuring that I am balancing both my work responsibilities and academic commitments effectively. She is also very approachable and available if I need guidance outside of these meetings. In addition to supporting my academic progress, she regularly checks in on my wellbeing to ensure I am doing okay more generally. She is always happy to talk through my KSBs and assignments with me, which helps reassure me that I am on track and progressing as expected.

How well do you feel that your qualification (through your training provider) helps you to perform better in your role?

4/5
Learning and continuing to develop my design skills through my qualification is essential in helping me perform better in my role. The course allows me to build on both the creative and theoretical aspects of design, which I can then apply directly to the work I produce at SAP. Being able to develop new techniques, explore different approaches to design, and strengthen my understanding of visual communication helps me improve the quality of my work and approach projects with greater confidence. Additionally, for some assignments that are centred around SAP and require the work to relate back to the company, this encourages me to develop a deeper understanding of SAP itself. Through researching its solutions, branding, and messaging as part of these assignments, I am able to strengthen my knowledge of the organisation while also applying my creative skills.

Are there extra-curricular activities to get involved in at your work? (For example, any social activities, sports teams, or even professional networking events.)

5/5
There are many extra-curricular activities available - there's a variety of social clubs such as a book club, Toastmasters, padel club, and a football team, which provide great opportunities to connect with colleagues outside of day-to-day work. There are also several networking groups and societies, such as Women in Business, that encourage professional connection and development. In addition, networking sessions are often incorporated into events, both during and after, which makes it easy to meet people from across different teams and areas of the organisation.

Recommendations & Advice

Would you recommend SAP to a friend?

Yes

Why?

I would recommend SAP to a friend. The people and team culture make it a very supportive and enjoyable place to work, and there are many opportunities to learn, develop new skills, and gain valuable experience. The combination of professional development and exposure to a wide range of projects makes it a great environment to grow early in your career.

What tips or advice would you give to others applying to SAP?

I would advise others applying to SAP to be open to learning and willing to get involved in a variety of projects, as the work can be fast-paced and varied. It’s also important to show curiosity and a proactive attitude, as there are many opportunities to develop new skills and take on responsibility early on. Equally, I would recommend making the most of the people around you, as the teams are very supportive and there is a lot to learn from colleagues across the business.
