Overview of the Role

Overall, how would you describe your experience at National Grid?
Overall I have had an incredibly positive experience during my graduate scheme with National Grid. The scheme offered a year and a half opportunity to delve into various sectors of the business and really immerse myself in, and contribute to, the work the company undertakes.
From this I have developed numerous professional and personal skills and have been supported to drive my own career and deliver for my future.
What are the main responsibilities of the role and which elements of the role do you enjoy the most?
Across the three graduate placements I completed the main responsibilities I enjoyed were:
Liaising with contractors to investigate a project query. I drove this work forward and was able to demonstrate my capabilities.
Analysing contractor work submissions and from that investigating any discrepancies found.
Networking with my colleagues and expanding my professional circle - I have been able to draw upon my network for support and guidance.
To what extent does your role give you the opportunity to contribute meaningfully and feel valued by your team?
4/5
Ultimately the answer to this comes down to your manager. I am thankful that across two of my three placements I was able to deliver meaningful work that directly contributed towards project goals. However, I also experienced the opposite of this; struggling to get work even when putting myself forward and volunteering to take on tasks.
How does your compensation package - including perks & benefits - fairly remunerate you for the work you do?
5/5
National Grid offers a really competitive compensation and benefit package that all graduates are recommended to take advantage of.
How well do you feel the role is preparing you for your future career?
4/5
If you have a clear vision of the role you want to step into you can get incredible hands on experience, preparing you for your future. Grid will also support you to professional accreditation.
How would you rate the extent to which you were developing new or existing skills through formal training and your day-to-day role?
5/5
There is a comprehensive training programme in place for graduates that really benefits individuals transitioning from university to the workplace. This includes behavioural mentoring, coaching that champions your career development, and detailed technical training.
In addition to this, the learning to be taken away from day to day work is invaluable.

Experience & Company Culture

How is the support you receive?
4/5
The careers team, in my experience, will do everything to support you, however they understandably manage a large number of graduates and therefore cannot be expected to answer to every question immediately.
I experienced both incredibly supportive and incredibly frustrating line managers, ultimately coming down to their individual styles of management.
How is your work-life balance?
5/5
National Grid offers a brilliant work life balance.
What is the organisational culture, values and general atmosphere like?
5/5
National Grid really values and champions a safety focused working culture, which means no question feels unimportant. If you are curious about something you are encouraged to ask.
How would you rate National Grid initiatives when it comes to equality, diversity, inclusion and accessibility?
5/5
Grid supports numerous employee resource groups across a range of diverse needs.
How would you rate National Grid CSR (Corporate Social Responsibility) initiatives?
5/5
Volunteering is absolutely encouraged at Grid and this branches across environmental, societal and academic opportunities.

Recommendations & Advice

Would you recommend National Grid to a friend?
Yes
Why?
Because I have been supported to drive and define my own success and career journey, which is not something you will be given at every company.
How well did the role match your expectations based on the recruitment process?
3/5
When considering the recruitment & onboarding process, have you any specific tips or advice you would give to others applying to National Grid?
Demonstrate the soft skills you have developed in addition to your technical skills.
You may have a vast knowledge but if you do not have the capacity to share knowledge or work within group settings you will not succeed.
