Overview of the Role

Overall, how would you describe your experience at National Grid?
Really positive. The scheme is one I would recommend to anyone. Having the opportunity to work in three different roles (one of which being completely different to your area) gave me invaluable experience. I may not have ended the scheme as a specialist in one thing because of moving every 6 months but feel that the rest of my career is for that and this scheme is more beneficial. I got the chance to adapt to role/business area change 4 times across 18 months and went from finding change really hard to being comfortable with discomfort which is a vital skill. I also met so many great contacts throughout the time in placement. Graduates are really accepted in teams and a lot of successful people in the company started as graduates too so the culture is very encouraging. Being in a business support role, I thought working at any company is fine because I am doing a similar role anywhere however since doing the graduate scheme, I have had the opportunity to really understand what NG do and how important they are as a company which adds a real layer of meaning to my work that I haven't had before. We got opportunities to go to substations, site visits, meet the CEO and Business Presidents through volunteering opportunities. It is a great graduate scheme and the skills developed are invaluable.
What are the main responsibilities of the role and which elements of the role do you enjoy the most?
Each role I did was very different. The first was quite structured, data heavy and detailed. I had the opportunity to lead on two impactful projects that went as far as the CEO level which was exciting for a first placement. This was a global role spread across the UK/US. The second role was broadening so I got to work with a Chief of Staff in one of the businesses, this was really varied and I enjoyed getting to be in the executive meetings to understand how decisions are made at a high level. I also got to understand how performance is measured at the company and did some event planning. It was very varied but gave me some great insight. My third placement gave me the opportunity to 'partner' a team which was a great experience as a graduate. I was definitely thrown in the deep end but really enjoyed doing a range of activities and having the autonomy to make decisions in that area. I was definitely very trusted in this placement which was a great transition to my first post role.
To what extent does your role give you the opportunity to contribute meaningfully and feel valued by your team?
5/5
How does your compensation package - including perks & benefits - fairly remunerate you for the work you do?
5/5
The package is the best I have seen at graduate level. The pay is very competitive alongside monthly payments for renting. The pension as well as protection is excellent and I have never felt unfairly compensated.
How well do you feel the role is preparing you for your future career?
5/5
How would you rate the extent to which you were developing new or existing skills through formal training and your day-to-day role?
5/5

Experience & Company Culture

How is the support you receive?
4/5
Really positive overall, I had one bad experience during one of my placements but this was one team member and this is bound to happen when you interact with so many people over the scheme.
How is your work-life balance?
5/5
Real encouragement for flexible working
What is the organisational culture, values and general atmosphere like?
5/5
The culture does feel quite corporate at times but equally I think this is because safety is so engrained in values so this is taken very seriously, something that I really appreciate. Hybrid working policies are really flexible.
How would you rate National Grid initiatives when it comes to equality, diversity, inclusion and accessibility?
4/5
We have ERGs (Employee Resource Groups) which anyone can join and it gives a real sense of community. The only reason I put 4 is because change is so constant and I think there needs to be more communication business wide when I think about neurodivergent colleagues (e.g. the format of calls changing could be a simple communication that'd make a huge difference).
How would you rate National Grid CSR (Corporate Social Responsibility) initiatives?
5/5

Recommendations & Advice

Would you recommend National Grid to a friend?
Yes
Why?
I think it is an opportunity you will never get again to work in a company that will let you move around so often and is so supportive. The work the company does is so valuable too and is definitely expanding so it is a really exciting time to be in the business. I also feel very empowered when I look at so many strong women on our leadership board which is extremely rare for an engineering company but very empowering.
How well did the role match your expectations based on the recruitment process?
4/5
It was very close but it wasn't communicated to me that I was contracted to return to my first placement. After I expressed this, they did take this on board though and gave me more flexibility.
When considering the recruitment & onboarding process, have you any specific tips or advice you would give to others applying to National Grid?
Just be yourself, there is no correct formula to get the role so if you are your authentic self then that is the best way of knowing if you are right for NG or if they are right for you :)
